Back to her seat, Joanna then opened the box and took out a cake. Slicing it, Joanna put each slice on two small plates and served it for mother and daughter.
"I am honored to know Aunt Camille and Valerie here because wanted to see me. I apologize for not being able to give a good company earlier. Because I wasn't in my good health, not because I didn't like your presence. It was surprising indeed. Thus, I take this chance to convey my gratitude. As you know, we don't know when I can see you all again. Please enjoy this cake. I hope it suits you well."
"What cake is this?" Soon after Joanna stopped speaking, Valerie asked. She looked warry. Her face was stiff.
Upon finding her in that state, Joanna smiled faintly. "This is my favorite cake. It was made by our new baker," Joanna answered.
"But why don't you take it one too, Ann?" came another question from Valerie, her face still warry.
