Chapter 409 - Chapter 409: The Holy Sword of Physics and the God of Staircase Battles

"Click."

Jack emptied the remaining bullets in his magazine in less than half a minute, replacing it with a new one while searching for fresh targets.

The area near the police station was in complete chaos, or rather, the entire town's ogres had suddenly gone berserk.

These creatures might not fear pain, but they certainly feared death. When they saw their companions losing half their heads or their arms flying off, they let out terrified screeches, desperately seeking cover.

Jack wielded a bolt-action sniper rifle, which only fired one shot per trigger pull, not a minigun mounted on a helicopter.

After emptying the second magazine, the monsters at the intersection scattered, leaving behind over a dozen corpses. A few ogres, either smart or dumb, attempted to retaliate with their bows and arrows after realizing the attack was coming from the clock tower.

"Bang!"

The .338 Lapua Magnum round easily pierced through the thin metal of a pickup truck, tearing through the arm and chest of an ogre trying to draw its bow, before embedding itself into the asphalt road.

With a few eerie, owl-like shrieks, the remaining dozen or so ogres at the intersection seemed to receive an order. They deftly leaped over the pickup trucks serving as barricades, using the nearby buildings for cover, and charged towards the clock tower.

"Jack, be careful! They're coming for you!"

Hearing the concerned warning from Jie Jie in his earpiece, Jack wasn't worried; in fact, he seemed pleased.

"Get ready. Once they come in, you guys charge. Watch out for the idiots inside the police station."

He ignored the faint sounds from below the clock tower, staying focused on clearing the third magazine, targeting the ogres further down the shopping street.

By now, the distance exceeded the range of his expert-level sniper skills, and the Barrett MK22 wasn't an anti-materiel sniper rifle. It lacked the .50 caliber's insane multipurpose armor-piercing incendiary rounds, so his kill count was minimal.

Meanwhile, as the ogres shoved and jostled their way into the clock tower entrance, Emily could no longer hold back and started up the Raptor.

Two blinding beams shot from the Raptor's headlights, startling the ogres who hadn't made it into the clock tower yet. The roar of the engine followed as the powerful pickup truck sped toward them.

Jie Jie leaned out of the back seat, while Hodgner popped through the sunroof, both unloading their assault rifles. The three ogres who hadn't yet squeezed into the clock tower were torn to shreds.

As agreed, the Raptor didn't stop under the tower, but sped off with a sharp turn towards the intersection.

At the top of the clock tower, Jack grabbed a crowbar in his left hand and drew his FK 7.5 pistol with his right, waiting for the first ogre to reach the top.

"Bang! Bang! Bang!" He didn't conserve ammo, firing repeatedly into the chest of the gasping creature.

Although the tower was only about 20 meters tall, climbing the spiral staircase built along the walls was physically demanding, whether for humans or the deceptively agile ogres, who walked with a swaying gait.

The first ogre barely had time to catch its breath, foam still at the corners of its mouth, when its heaving chest was torn open with several bullet holes. Breathing suddenly became far too easy.

With a heavy swing, Jack's "Holy Sword of Physics" – the crowbar – smashed into the ogre's head. The creature toppled over the low, makeshift railing, plummeting silently to the ground below.

A few seconds later, a dull thud echoed from the base of the clock tower.

"Bang! Bang! Bang!" Muzzle flashes lit up the dark staircase as the second ogre tumbled down the stairs.

The FK 7.5 had a 15-round magazine, but Jack made no effort to conserve ammo. His left hand used the crowbar to block the third ogre's swinging blade, while his right hand fired shot after shot.

When the fourth ogre fell, the rest of the creatures behind it grew uneasy. Jack wouldn't let them flee, though, and began charging downward.

His senses fully alert, Jack dodged an arrow blindly shot from below, holstered his empty FK 7.5, and shifted the crowbar to his right hand. He swung upward with all his might.

The curved end of the crowbar sank deep into an ogre's chin, shattering its throat. With a flick of his wrist, Jack sent another corpse tumbling down the stairs.

"Clang!" A lumberjack's axe came crashing down, only to be parried by the crowbar. Sparks flew as a screeching sound filled the air.

The ogre in front of him had a left arm as small and withered as a child's, almost like a T-rex's useless limbs.

As if compensating for its tiny left arm, the ogre's right arm was enormous, muscles bulging. It swung its heavy lumberjack's axe with blinding speed, like a hammer, aiming repeatedly for Jack's head.

Jack gripped the crowbar with both hands, blocking three consecutive strikes, his palms stinging from the impact. He quickly retreated, silently stepping back two stairs.

When the axe swung down again, Jack didn't block it. The blade slammed into the stair instead, shattering it.

As the ogre paused in surprise, Jack reversed the crowbar and drove its sharp end into the creature's eye socket. With a sickening squelch, the crowbar pierced through its skull, exiting from the back of its head.

He kicked the now-dead ogre down the stairs and glanced at the two remaining ones behind it.

The two ogres exchanged nervous glances and began pushing each other.

Could these brutes actually be afraid? It must feel like watching a delicious chicken leg on your plate suddenly sprout a set of jaws and try to eat you. What a rare experience.

Jack smirked, slowly and mockingly walking down the stairs. The two ogres, finally too scared to keep pushing each other, made their moves: one drew a bow while the other let out a ghostly howl, raising its dagger as it charged.

"Thud!"

The crowbar easily knocked the dagger aside, followed by a crushing blow to the ogre's knee. As it was forced to kneel, an arrow shot past from behind it.

Jack stomped down on the kneeling ogre and sidestepped the arrow. With a swift throw, the now-bloodied crowbar impaled the archer behind it, pinning it to the ground.

He calmly drew his FK 7.5 from his side holster, reloaded a fresh magazine, and chambered a round.

"Bang! Bang!"

"Alright, guys, I'm done. How are things on your end?" Jack climbed back to the top of the clock tower, picking up the Barrett MK22 to survey the situation below, all while speaking into the radio.
