Chapter 5 - Chapter 4 - Violet's childhood (Part 2)

As a child being bullied because of her looks, she even asked her father out of the blue if she was adopted and he turned livid instantly. He said that there was no chance that Violet was adopted and that she was simply a mix of his looks and that of her mother's. He calmed Violet down by saying that some people become more beautiful as they grow older so she just had to wait a few years and everything will be better.

Many people thought that as the princess of the ArchEx empire, Violet was raised gently in the palm of her father's hand but the truth is far from that. Violet always joked about being raised to be a part-time soldier and not just the future president of the company.

Growing up, Violet never had "real" friends and she was homeschooled due to her father's fear of her being kidnapped by criminals or killed by rival companies. She was only allowed to attend a normal school when it was time to get her university degree. She has only played with the children of the house helpers or the guards that were assigned to their home 24/7.

Her playmates usually just play with her once then she never sees them again for some reason. She simply thought that she must be a pain to be with as a child since the only games she knew of were educational games that are still somewhat connected to topics on business, languages or archaeology, things that "normal" children will have no interest in.

Those children must have been weirded out or bored to death by her game choices but the poor children must have been unable to voice it out since she was the child of their parents' boss. She never blamed them about it since she was indeed brought up differently and being an only child did not help with her social awkwardness too. Her father ended up raising a daughter who was a nerd and also a shut-in.

Violet had read in books that a child's development years go by very fast. They learn quickly and a lot too during that period if given proper support and educated properly. She can very much attest to this since she was the perfect example of a child that has undergone a rigorous learning method during her development years.

When Violet turned 13, her father started bringing her whenever the group explores historical sites for profit. He told her that he wanted Violet to see first hand what her future job and business will be like as well as how highly profitable but at the same time risky it was.

By the time Violet turned 15, she was already fluent in 6 languages: English, Spanish, Filipino, Nihongo, Hindi and Arabic, languages that are widely used by a lot of people in the current world. She also have conversational proficiency in Chinese, Russian and Swahili. She is also able to decipher a lot of scripts written in ancient languages on her own.

As part of her training, she is also proficient in the use of bladed weapons, different type of guns, compound bows as well as hand-to-hand combat. Her father made sure she learned the most popular types of martial arts such as Hapkido, Krav Maga and Muay Thai.

Though her father has always made sure to keep her healthy by making his daughter exercise everyday while eating only healthy food, ironically, she was a regular at the company-owned hospital due to many instances of being wounded, bruised, having sprained limbs and occasional broken bones. Due to all the martial arts practice sessions and the raiding missions she was part of since she was young, she was highly skilled but also ended up hurt most of the time.

Violet can say that her only weakness is that if she starts doing a task, all her focus is in that task alone. She tends to drown out every sound and existence around her. This has resulted in her ignoring people by mistake and missing out important information that were being reported to her. It is honestly a safety issue as well which is giving her bodyguards and aides a huge headache.

Her attendants used to joke about how Violet could have been carried then placed inside a sack, thrown on a ship heading to who knows where but then she would still continue reading the book she was holding like everything around her is perfectly fine. She refused to believe them and simply laughed at their comments but she always knew that the problems it causes will just be bigger as she gets older.

Another not-so-normal part of Violet's childhood were attending parties hosted by her father's business partners and high ranking people in the company. Banquets are fine but the nonstop matchmaking that comes with it was unbearable for her. Being an only heir, she totally looked like a golden ticket for the unmarried sons, nephews, younger brothers and godsons of these business associates and clients for the high and worry-free life.

As for the little golden ticket also known as VIOLET, she has learned how to ignore and divert the topic to other more productive things. She doesn't mind being friends with others but it is just that everybody seemed to have another agenda for approaching her that she just felt fed up and exhausted.

Another thing that Violet loves about her father is that though he was strict with her education and safety, he never forced her on blind dates or to be friends with anybody for company benefits. Her father trusted her enough to let her choose who she wants to be with and who she wants to avoid.

Her prideful father never accepted any gifts or agreements that wanted to include his daughter's hand in marriage as part of the deal. She asked him one time about the reason why he hated alliance marriages and he simply said, "I wanted you to find the kind of love similar to what I have for your mother." and that successfully ended the topic at that.

The year that Violet turned 16, her father was diagnosed with an invasive type of cancer. It was the type that has not been studied fully and have no specific treatment for its cure. When the results of what supposed to be a yearly check-up came in, the cancer has already progressed to Stage IV with no warning signs whatsoever. Many of his internal organs have already been affected and the doctor simply said that it all started in one small part of his large intestines.

Violet and his trusted aides were bluntly advised that the only option at that time could only be to take regular sessions of chemotherapy in hopes to at least slow down the spread of the cancer cells in his body as well as continuous cycles of pain reducing medication. In short, her father had a very limited time left to live. Her father was a strong-willed person so he continued working as if he wasn't sick, diligently preparing everything for his daughter.

It may sound cliché but her father has always been like a superhero for Violet. Managing a company while taking care of a little girl on his own, he made sure that he was able to fulfill both roles as adequately as he could. Just as he always was, even with the invasive cancer as his enemy, he fought tooth and nail and proved the doctors wrong.

Violet has consulted several doctors and each one of them said that he can only live for a month at most but her father was able to live for 10 more months. She always believed that her father waited for her 17th birthday which was also her coming of age celebration. Even if he was in pain, he still still worked to make sure that he has planned the future goals and projects of the corporation for at least the next 5 years to lighten the load off of her daughter's shoulders.

A few weeks after Violet turned 17, her father succumbed to the illness leaving a girl that has just come of age on her own to manage a billion-peso corporation with thousands of employees. He has planned out everything to the tee so the transferring of all duties and responsibilities to Violet was very smooth. With all the plans he has created beforehand, it felt like he never left his daughter's side and he was still guiding all of her decisions on a daily basis. It eased a lot of Violet's fears and loneliness.

On her father's deathbed, he finally told Violet the real story about how he met her mother. He said her name was Lilac and that he did not know much about her origins but it being love at first sight was true. He said that at times he even felt that he was hit by a love spell or maybe drank some love potion of some sort.

Violet remembered her father smiling but an obvious hint of pain showed in his eyes as he said that their relationship came and went really quick, just a short half a year. He admitted that he always called her his wife but they never got the chance to take their relationship to the next step.
