Chapter 9 - Past life

AC* (author's comment): Hello, little angels, sorry for not posting lately, but my computer has officially died, and until I can fix it, I'm going to my sister's house to borrow the computer daily. Since the computer is shared between other people, the posting times may not be consistent, but I'll try to keep them as close as possible.

Starting today, we'll resume daily updates, and I'll try to keep this pace until the end of the first volume, at least.

The release of the webtoon will have to be postponed a bit, but the chapters of the book will be updated daily.

But back to the main topic, today's chapter is a flashback about Alex's first life, where we'll find out what led our protagonist to completely darken, something that Alex will try to prevent in his second life, no matter what the cost.

Completely tired and with his powers exhausted, Alex, sitting in a blood-stained jeep, forces himself to remain alert and vigilant, ready for the next battle if necessary.

"Boss, we're almost at the base, wouldn't it be better if you rested a little to recover your energy?" said to his subordinate A, who was driving.

"Your subordinate is right, Mr. Alex, you were tense and alert for an entire month to rescue me. Now that we're safe and almost at the base, you should rest properly, after all, you exhausted your powers to protect me from the zombies," said the doctor.

The mission Alex took was an extremely dangerous rescue mission for a renowned scientist who would become the base's key scientist.

There were rumors at the base that the researchers, unable to achieve results in their research on zombies, were kidnapping humans with superpowers to use for their research, trying to find the connection between their superpowers and the zombie virus.

This rumor was discredited, and few people believed it, because during the apocalypse many people died, and it was normal for them to disappear.

The disappearance of normal people was obviously due to the fact that they were weak and had been killed by zombies.

And the disappearance of people with superpowers was due to the fact that their powers were weak and they had died on missions, something that was actually very common.

Due to this fact, the core crystals that could help a person with superpowers to level up or recharge their superpower while fighting, thus saving their life, became invaluable and consequently became a new means of exchange, replacing money and gold.

First-level cores became the most commonly used to make transitions because they contained little energy, and a huge amount of them were needed to level up, being commonly used only to recharge energy by low-level people.

Obviously, the higher the level of the core crystals, the greater their preciousness, and the cores of zombies with supernatural powers were sought after in large numbers.

These cores were special, and each type of superpower corresponded to a different color, and with this core, depending on the person's level and the level of the core, it could be used directly to level up.

These cores worked much better than the cores of normal zombies for people with superpowers.

These cores, however, could only be used by people with the corresponding superpower, because if the person with the superpower absorbed the wrong core, it would explode.

Something that was announced by the researchers much later, causing the death of many people with superpowers.

For this reason, the core of normal zombies was more popular and more widely used, because anyone with superpowers could use them, even though the effect was much less than a crystal with the specific power.

"I'm fine, even though my superpowers are exhausted and I am unable to use them at the moment. "I've rested enough and can use the weapons to kill the zombies," said Alex. "Boss…" said subordinate B with tears in his eyes.

"Boss is right, we worked hard for a month to complete the mission, and we can't afford to relax now, even though we're close to the base, zombies could appear at any moment," said subordinate C.

"We're all tired, and many of us have exhausted our powers, our strength has diminished considerably. We can't let our guard down until we reach the base," said subordinate A.

"We lost several comrades during this trip, and some of them are still in the other cars, injured and in need of medical care."

"We have a responsibility to protect them and the doctor until the end," said Alex.

"Mister Alex… If you ever need my help, you can come to me, and I will help you as much as I can," said the doctor with red eyes, thinking about how the world had changed after the apocalypse and it was rare to find someone like Alex in the current times.

"That's my duty, doctor, and we'll be rewarded for taking you to the base, so you don't owe me anything," Alex said. He was just doing what was necessary to survive.

In fact, the team members had core crystals to replenish their energy, but these crystals were only to be used in case of emergency. If they wasted them now, it could cost them their lives. Also, the value of these core crystals only increased as people with supernatural powers leveled up and needed more of them and at higher and higher levels to replenish their powers.

Because of this, the use of each core crystal had to be well planned, as they couldn't afford to waste them.

"It's rare to have people like you after the apocalypse, that gives me hope."

"My words remain, if you need any help in the future, just look for me."

"Thank you, doctor," Alex said.
