Chapter 4 - Decisions

Authors note: just gonna continue

Jacob

After Cole leaves the room it's just me and my dad. Both of us are silent for a moment until he speaks. "I love you jake. And I'm so sorry I couldn't help you." He says showing the most emotion I've seen from him. While I would usually try to assuage his worries and sadness I find my mind keeps being pulled elsewhere. To the offer Cole made me to be like him.

I remember him appear almost from thin air on the deck after the 'incident,' he was so fast. I remember his eyes, deep pools of darkness with a mouth full of teeth and the slight grayish/white tone of his skin.

I saw bullet wounds on his skin heal in seconds. The same bullets that had me on the edge of death.

My fathers voice cuts through my thoughts, "jake? Are you listening to me?" He asks.

Shaking my head I reply to him, "I'm sorry dad. Just got a lot of other stuff on my mind."

He gasps. "You're not actually thinking about going through with it?" He asked askance, shaking his head as though the idea was unimaginable.

Before I can answer that question he continues, "I've been trying to speak to you as if it's our last time because I thought it was. Cole said you'd die after a few days of not completing the transition, but the look in your eye tells me you've decided against that."

I break eye contact. Not sure how to defend the want to become whatever Cole is. After a few calming breaths I reply. "It's about not dying. I don't want to die dad." I say honestly.

"It's unnatural," my father replied shaking his head. I can't let you do it."

That makes my muscles tense. I go to speak but before I can a hand lands on my fathers shoulder. Cole.

"You don't think I'd actually let you do what you're implying Jack?" He asks. My father rips Cole's shoulder away and yells at him.

"You've done enough! I should've never let you on my boat. In fact, when we get to the mainland I'll-"

A sickening soundtears through the room. I see Cole with his hand around my fathers wrist which is now at an unnatural angle.

"How funny. You saw what I did to those attackers and you still think you're in charge here? Fine. I told myself I wasn't going to do this to you or Jacob. But…." He trails off with his eyes slowly turning black, "plans change."

In an instant my dad was against the wall and Cole looked deeply into his eyes. "You will forget ever having seen my abilities. To you I'm just a normal kid who helped your son. Walk out of this door, forget what you saw, and go get some rest. You must be horribly tired."

"So..tired," I hear my father mumble with glassy eyes. After that Cole bites his hand and makes my father drink it. I see his bone set itself and my dad gasps.

"Good." Cole said, releasing him before speaking again. "Now go."

With that my dad turned like a robot and left the room. I instantly question my friend. "What the hell was that!?"

He sighs. "I'm sorry. But that was the only option. Had he been anyone else I would've taken his head," he said with upmost seriousness.

I let out a shakey breath knowing it's true. The look in those dark eyes was something I'll never forget. "What are you?" I ask trying to at least steer the conversation toward something productive.

He chuckles. "I'm a vampire. And you may be as well." Well that confirmed my theory. I'd suspected vampire but it's always good to hear from the horse's mouth so to say.

I nod and try to get my bearings before asking another question. "What did you do to my dad?"

"It's called mind compulsion. It allows vampires to manipulate the minds of men. It's mainly used as you just saw, to keep the secret safe."

"Okay, so if I drink blood I become a vampire?" I ask just for clarity.

He nods. "That's how it works."

"And what about the others?" I ask.

"Others?" Cole responds.

"Other vampires. And hell other supernatural creatures for that matter. I'm all but sure vampires can't be all that's out there."

This time Cole smiles. Had I not just seen what he can do I'd think him a perfectly normal guy. That was what was so crazy to me. How normal he looked and acted. My thoughts are taken from me when Cole speaks.

"Yes. There are others. Though the main ones we'll probably encounter are werewolves and witches." He said as if that wasn't nuts.

"Werewolves?" I ask.

Cole becomes very serious, "yes. And one bite can kill a vampire. Something to keep in mind." That definitely got my attention. One bite. A single bite.

"And the witches?" I ask.

This time, a different look comes across Cole's face. Loathing. "Witches are the source of all of this mess. Vampires, werewolves, and surprise surprise, the vampire wolf war started because of a witch."

Again, not super great things to hear from somebody you're trying to get join you, but I also appreciated Cole's honesty. Besides, the other choice I have is death.

With that in mind I've truly come to a decision. I want it.

Cole

After explaining a bit of the supernatural world to Jacob I see him become introspective. Deciding I'd let him think about whatever it is he needed to, I began to go over the change this new life has already done to me.

I'd nearly killed Jack. Someone I considered my friend a day ago. I'd almost killed him for being worried about his son. I knew I would change over time. Perhaps become different, but as I begin to reply what I've done in my head it becomes even more clear.

(AN: one of vampires abilities is to feel more deeply. We get into a bit of that here. This is also something the mc forgot about while watching the show in his past life.)

I'm beginning to spiral. So I focus on something else. Jacob. The second I look to him he seems to come out of whatever daze he's been in.

"I want it." I smile thankful maybe somebody can keep me grounded in this world. Jacob, from what I've seen so far in the week and a half knowing him, is always ready to help someone. Anyone. He's a nice person. Something rare.

With that I pull out the blood one of the compelled crew members generously donated and gave it to him.

I see him almost lunge at the vial of blood before gulping it down.

When he lowers the vial and opens his eyes the classic veins appear under his eyes. Along with the red scalera.

"Youre okay." I say to him. As he begins to feel the new sensations I myself am familiar with.

When I speak he locks eyes with me. "I'm better than okay." I see his regular two fangs poking out as he speaks and begin to question myself.

"Why am I so different from him? He's clearly a tvd version of a vampire. But what am I?' I ask myself in the recesses of my mind. Both half wishing and dreading finding out.

End.
