[115 Days Left to Live]
The rich smell of nasi lemak, a traditional Malaysian breakfast, filled the small dining room. The rice was perfectly fluffy, rich with creamy coconut milk; the sambal was deep red, glimmering with chili oil; crispy anchovies, hardboiled eggs cut in halves, and cucumber slices were neatly placed on a plate alongside. The moment Zephany finished adding the last piece of cucumber, she pressed her hands against her apron, nodded in satisfaction, and let a small, happy hum escape her lips.
She turned back toward the stove and switched it off, making sure everything was ready just in time. The dining table was already set: two neatly folded napkins, two pairs of cutlery, a small pot of sweetened black tea, and two clear glasses. The rich, savory smell seemed to wrap the whole room in a comforting blanket of home.
