Meanwhile, Evans stood nearby, feeling like an unnecessary observer. Though Edith hadn't answered his earlier questions, he already understood the truth. He didn't like it, but his feelings couldn't change what was real. If Davion—his master—chose her, there was nothing Evans could do to change that, even if he wanted to. And, truthfully, he didn't dislike her. If anyone deserved Davion, it was someone like Edith.
