8:00 AM
Bright crimson flames crackle into the air lifelessly from the now empty husks of buildings all around. The stench of blood, smoke and cooked meat permeates throughout streets that once were bustling with chatter and business. Mother and child lay in piles as the searing blades of otherworldly creatures cut through their remains like butter, taking mouth after mouthful of damned souls into their maws and sinking them down their throat to the bottomless pits of hell.
The ending of all human life, the rapture, had began only an hour ago, yet it was already near its end. The human population had gone from sixteen billion, to only a few hundred with ruthless and callous effiency. Among those barely surviving children of god, a woman stood inside of a decaying apartment, hand in hand with a hideous monster with an uncountable amount of tragedies to it's name. The monster had short cut black hair just like a human. It's eyes were squinted like an ordinary person. Just like any other person, she had skin, it was a light brown tan. All in all, it smelt, appeared and talked like any other human being. However, it was an irrefutable fact that the one that stood before this living woman was anything but. A harbringer of death and destruction, a demon akin to those who were consuming the damned, though with one key difference; it didn't want the woman to be sunk down to hell with the others. It didn't want to see her corpse mangled and broken, though it's the fate it brought upon her.
"Please... If this is my fate, to perish here, with you... I"
The human was barely able to choke out her words through the thick smoke that came from the brimstone and flames. She felt her lungs being caught in a grip of agonizing disease from what felt like some sort of gas meant to extinct all life within someone from a single whiff. She felt as if her very blood was cracking, like it had congealed into a disgusting mass that can be shattered apart like glass. The ground trembled as she coughed, the ceiling above beginning to give out to the pressure from above. The girl stumbled forward, coughing into and latching to the torn suit shirt of the monster, its arms wrapping around her protectively. In that moment, the above apartment gave out and crashed to below onto the two. The monster remained stalwart and stoic, putting herself above the human as to keep her safe underneath it, it's larger body protecting her mostly from the rubble and debris, but not from the dust and further gas that seeped into the room.
"Come on Matty, stay with me! You can't perish. I won't let you."
Spoke the abomination, it's voice full of urgency and determination, yet cracked with small hints of fear as she distanced her face from the human's own. It was not a mortal being like Matty, it did not fret the rubble above crushing her, nor did it agonize the thought of disease seeping into her lungs like the woman did. The beast was not in danger in this envrionment, it was one it was always meant to live in. A world of ruin and bloodshed, yet it was not a world it wanted to claim as it's own anymore. It stared into the fading light of the human woman's eyes, the light it so desperately wished to remain under for the rest of it's days. In months past, it found the brightness comforting, a feeling that it was not accustomed to in the slightest. Darkness was meant to be the beast's friend, yet the light of this human made it feel like it... no, she, had a long future to bask under it. Perhaps this was why she felt something fall from her eyes, replications of organs as to mask her true identity. Were these what human tears were? They stained the dirtied face of Matty who looked up, the light in her eyes twinkling at the sight.
"Hah... I thought you said you don't cry... perhaps there are things you never knew about yourself."
She hacked up blood that was swelling in her throat that rotted into a black ooze as it came to contact with the sinful air. Her veins began to pump and bulge in her neck and body, a distinct green glow making it clear that her expiration date was coming in only moments from now. The monster's time with her, it was running out. Her time as a lover, as a friend, as a person. It was all fleeting with every beat the human's heart slowed by. Perhaps, a beat that she could feel her own chest start to resonate with, as if the two's internal rhythyms were in sync in this one, cruel moment.
"It's alright to cry you know... goodbyes always make me cry too."
The monster, no, the other woman shook her head more violently than she had ever done in the past. She didn't want to say goodbye, even if they were to reunite in death, now that she was damned to hell with her, she'd be tortured. Her soul was so pure, why did she do this. Why did it do this? Why did it have to be so cruel? If it truly loved her, It would have never tried to condemn Matty to this. The beast continued to sob, it's sorrowful tears falling onto Matty. Matty felt her blood being crushed even by the weight of the monster's tears now, making her yelp in pain weakly. The beast gasped, shaking its head while whispering to Matty;
"I am so sorry, I am so sorry... you don't deserve this..."
It slumped a bit in her position, still keeping the rubble held up on it's back. It truthfully wished it was able to perish in this moment with Matty. If this was goodbye, it wanted them both to say it together, not to live on without her as it watched her be tortured. Perhaps, a year ago, it's foolish desires sounded idealistic to it. Now, however? It wished it could personally go back and destroy it's past self. Matty saw this conflict on her love's face, trying to use the last of her rotting strength to speak.
"You know, I do have one regret; when you admitted the truth to me. Revealed to me that you were a spawn of hell. You said you have a form that no living being can see, or else their soul will be absorbed into your body."
Matty's words were somewhat gargled in her statement, her own disgusting blood attempting to strangle her from the inside from it's sheer volume and viscosity. She powered through, however, she had one last request, one last thing to ask. The creature stared, still trying to control its new found feelings of immense, somber pain. Why was she bringing this up now? What purpose could this have?
"I don't want to say goodbye either... I want to experience everything you experience."
With a sickening squelch, Matty raised an arm to her chest. Her girlfriend's. The beautiful woman she had fallen in love with in spite of every little horrifying detail to her. She wasn't just some demon or monster. Not a beast or creature. Matty stared into her beloved's eyes, doing her best to muster one last joyful, enthusastic smile. The smile that the other woman had fallen in love with. The smile that turned this demon human.
"Please, Moros, Horsewoman of Death. Show your true form, consume my soul and bring me with you wherever you go."
