Gilbert was about to explode in anger, but the drowsy voice of his son over the phone instantly extinguished the flames within him.
"Alright, you go home first. Daddy will be back soon," he said, his tone softening. After hanging up, he jumped into his car.
Still, there was a vague sense of unease tugging at him, something felt off, though he couldn't quite put his finger on it.
As Claire got out of the car, she hugged Dean tightly, tears brimming in her eyes. Adam was her son, but so was Dean, she couldn't bear to part with either of them.
"Mommy, don't worry. I'll take good care of myself," Dean said sadly. Claire was about to leave with Adam and Hilary, and he would be the only one left behind. His eyes were already red.
But there was nothing he could do to make Daddy love Mommy again, and he certainly couldn't stop him from marrying that ugly witch. For the safety of Adam and Hilary, Mommy had no choice but to leave.
He had to be strong. He was a good, sensible boy.
