Chapter 14: Too Brutal
November 22nd, sunny, no wind, stuffy and hot.
The continuous darkness that had lasted for several days abruptly ended.
It seemed to have returned to normal day and night cycles, but unusually, the sun was scorching hot with temperatures reaching 36 degrees Celsius.
The sun finally came out, and Li Yu breathed a sigh of relief.
With no sunlight for so many days and the high-voltage electric fence running 24 hours a day, the previously stored electrical energy had been significantly depleted.
Looking at the late rice bending under the weight of its grains, Li Yu was contemplating whether to harvest it in the next couple of days.
Before Li Yu could speak, Grandfather approached to discuss this matter.
With the sun out now and heavy rain forecasted in a few days, it was best to harvest quickly. They could take advantage of these three days to dry the rice, ensuring proper storage without mold.
No sooner said than done.
Except for those on duty, everyone went to the fields to harvest.
Cutting rice, threshing, and bundling straw - with the efforts of over twenty people, it took less than three hours to harvest 4 mu of land.
In the afternoon, the harvested rice was spread out on the newly built cement road.
These three days would have sunshine and higher temperatures.
Given the situation, it was estimated that the drying could be completed before the heavy rain arrived on the 25th.
Everyone had initially been terrified of the apocalyptic world, but after emerging from that fear,
coupled with the recent lack of danger and no worries about food and clothing,
it felt not much different from before, as if the apocalypse wasn't so terrifying after all.
But what they didn't know was!
Without this wall,
without these abundant food supplies,
without this safe base,
could they still live so comfortably?
Since early November, with day and night reversals and temperature fluctuations, the government had advocated for reduced outings and had completely shut down transportation in recent days.
Over twenty days, supermarkets, takeaways, and convenience stores had gradually closed. Those in rural areas were better off with more food at home, but in the cities, people had already started dying of hunger!
In his previous life, Li Yu had just happened to stockpile some supplies, otherwise he too would have struggled to survive the early stages of the apocalypse.
On November 24th, Li Yu led Li Hang, Second Uncle, Uncle Lai, and a few others out of the base, intending to check on the village's situation.
Looking around, there were hardly any pedestrians on the road.
Occasionally, they could see two zombies wandering aimlessly.
Seeing this situation, everyone felt disheartened.
To avoid any accidents, after looking around the surroundings, Li Yu drove everyone back to the base.
However, on their way back, they didn't notice several shadowy figures following behind them.
As the car arrived at the main gate, today's duty officer was Uncle-in-law.
Seeing Li Yu getting out of the car, he hurriedly went down to unlock and push open the gate.
One person could only push one side of the gate at a time, so Li Yu prepared to go forward to help.
Just as he was about to walk towards the gate, a sudden inexplicable sense of crisis washed over him.
This sense of crisis had saved him many times in the apocalyptic world.
In an instant, Li Yu turned his head.
His eyes were fixed intently on a patch of woods behind the car.
There was no movement from the woods, but Li Yu continued to stare in that direction.
Second Uncle in the car noticed Li Yu's actions and quickly got out to look towards the woods, but after a while, he saw nothing and asked, "Xiao Yu, what's wrong? Is there something back there? Zombies?"
Uncle Lai and Li Hang, hearing this, also got out of the car, each holding a crossbow.
"If only it were just zombies, heh!" Li Yu chuckled coldly.
At the same time, he raised his compound crossbow and shouted, "Come out now, or I'll shoot!"
A gust of wind blew by,
Pine needles fell from the trees, making a soft rustling sound.
One second
Two seconds
Three seconds
Finally, the sound of footsteps was heard, and several figures appeared behind the bushes.
A middle-aged balding man wielding a butcher's knife emerged.
Upon closer look!
It turned out to be Li Yu's next-door neighbor, Wang Maoniu!
That damned multi-level marketing scammer!
How the hell was this guy still alive? Wasn't he surrounded by zombies in the toilet last time?
There were a few others with him, all village good-for-nothings, including even the bastard son of the village secretary.
A group of five, each wearing several gold rings on their fingers.
The good-for-nothings, upon seeing Li Yu, called out "Brother Yu" in greeting.
"Xiao Yu, we mean no harm, we're all neighbors after all," Neighbor Old Wang said, greedily eyeing the base behind them,
then continued, "There are so many monsters in the village now, it's terrifying. Could you, um, let us into your tourist park?"
"No!" Before Old Wang could finish speaking, Li Yu flatly refused.
Second Uncle and the others exchanged glances but said nothing.
Hearing this, the good-for-nothings immediately became displeased,
"We call you Brother Yu out of respect, don't get too full of yourself!"
"That's right, hurry up, step aside and let us in!"
"Don't block the way, or you'll regret it."
"Oh! There's really someone who doesn't value their life, huh? Want to bet I'll kill you? Yesterday, Ergouzi dared to stop us, do you know what happened to him in the end?" one of the young punks boasted arrogantly.
"I chopped him up! Hehe, his wife was really... juicy!"
The village secretary's son, hearing this, stared blankly at the young punk: "So you weren't just bragging, you really did that?"
The young punk looked at him with disdain, raised his right hand, pointing to one of the watches, and said, "See? This watch belonged to Ergouzi.
And it wasn't just me, these guys were even more vicious, they played much harder than I did, hahaha. Before, I let you hang out with us because you were the village secretary's son. Now you're nothing!"
Hearing this, the village secretary's son said in disbelief, "How dare you! How could you dare!"
On the other side.
Second Uncle and the others looked displeased after hearing this.
In contrast, Li Yu seemed unsurprised by what he heard, as if it was within his expectations.
With the apocalypse, judging human nature by previous moral standards would seem naive.
Some people are inherently good but gradually turn to the wrong path after being beaten down by social realities.
While others are evil to the core, no matter how much education they receive, they remain evil.
For truly evil people, Li Yu had his own set of principles.
Watching these good-for-nothings talking and approaching, Second Uncle was getting impatient and prepared to remind Xiao Yu.
Although these good-for-nothings saw Li Yu and the others holding crossbows and were somewhat wary, they weren't particularly afraid, as if they had some sort of backup!
They thought Li Yu and his group wouldn't dare shoot them! Because they were good people!
Swoosh!
A human head flew up, with an extremely smooth and neat cut on the shoulder.
Splurt! Blood gushed out from the hole below the shoulder
The fallen head on the ground still held a look of shock in its eyes!
Li Yu had always believed in: if it can be solved with action, don't waste words.
"Holy shit, that's too brutal!" Li Hang blurted out from behind.
"Too brutal, but also too cool!" Li Hang added.
Second Uncle, hearing this, gave him a speechless look.
Is this even human speech?
Damn, I thought you were going to say Yu'er was wrong.
The good-for-nothings behind were also stunned, damn, this wasn't how it was supposed to go!
According to normal procedure, shouldn't there be an argument first, then they suddenly attack at close range?
Moreover,
Although they were bad and had indirectly killed people, they had never been this brutal!
What's more, Li Yu was being brutal towards them!
How do you not fear bad people?
By being worse than the bad people! Only then will bad people fear you.
The good-for-nothings behind immediately stopped in their tracks, trembling as they backed away. The village secretary's son beside them even collapsed to the ground, his legs giving way from fear.
The good-for-nothings thought to themselves: Damn, you must be the bad guy! Your whole family must be bad people!
