The rest of the world was quiet now, Monte Luna wrapped in a blanket of stillness and starlight.
Sofia couldn't sleep.
She wasn't sure if it was the wine, the laughter, or the way Adam had looked at her while singing—but her body hummed with something restless.
She slipped outside quietly, careful not to wake the girls. A thin blanket was draped over her shoulders, her bare feet whispering across the wooden porch. She sat on the steps and looked up.
The stars were unreal. Clearer than she'd ever seen them. A whole sky full of silver secrets. It made her feel small in the best way.
"Can't sleep?"
She startled slightly, turning to find Adam leaning on the porch frame, barefoot, wearing just a plain shirt and joggers. His hair was a little messy, like he'd run his hands through it too many times.
"I didn't mean to wake you," she said softly.
"You didn't." He came closer, slow, unthreatening, then sat beside her. Not too close. Not too far.
They were quiet for a few moments.
