Chapter 22 - Side Story: Monster

°❀⋆.ೃ࿔*:・°❀⋆.ೃ࿔*:・

"Monsters aren't born, they're made, but who cares? Our experiences and lives mean nothing anyway- so who cares if I'm a monster by design or one that was forged? I'm a monster either way" - Ryuta Takehara

The term "monster" where does its origin lie? What constitutes such a being?

The answer could be found in various ways, using various tools and reasoning but- that does not solve the issue does it?

Blame

Curses

Stigma

All of these had turned once innocent and good people into… abominations.

It truly makes one wonder-

Why?

Why do people push others so far? Why do people love to watch others suffer? Why do people do the most detestable things, laughing as they kick others down but when they are on the receiving end they call it, the tormentors, once their victims- monster?

Who is the monster?

Where did this monster come from?

Various philosophers have spoke of the same things, their lessons ultimately being boiled down to the simple phrase-

Don't do unto others what you wish not others do unto you

It was a simple lesson, a simple phrase with a very surface level meaning.

No deep introspection and thinking was needed to understand and yet-

As I return once more to this dark and dreary place I begin to ask myself again…

Why me?

What did I do to deserve this?

What sin have I committed in my past life to deserve such a life?

A simple question, but the answer?

It was your own weakness

My mind, like always, echoes those words- the same words I used to excuse my actions, my evils-

They deserved it-

No- that's wrong… they didn't-

They can do such evil acts to us- to our family- to those we love and we need to forgive them?

That's different- that's not-

As I reject those echoes in my mind, the scene I had long locked away, an image that I hid in the deepest recesses of my memory.

It was the image I wish to never recall, its the one image that breaks me-

Our dear father, a man who rejected his lineage as a magus, a man who had spared many of his wealth to those in need- this man, was strung up on a cross, his body wrapped in thorned chains as he was made to watch- watch as his wife and beloved daughter were defiled before his eyes.

NO!

In the room where he had consummate his marriage-

In the room where his children were born-

In the room where a family of four shared their fondest memories-

STOP!

In such a room, men from all walks of life, those that he had saved, those that he had fed, those that he had helped-

Took turns ravaging his dearest treasures, for three days and three nights-

Hundreds of men went through the two women-

Hundred of women watched in scorn and pulled their husbands away calling the two victims trash-

SHUT UP!

Their wails and begging were only invigorated the men-

Their whimpers making the man continue their acts-

When all was said and done-

The pair of mother and daughter, their eyes already devoid of life, their bodies weak and powerless, were slowly killed, their heads sawed off with rusty dull blades but not a scream could be heard.

Their throats already hoarse from the "punishment" their nerves numb from the pain-

Even the most excruciating death was a pleasure for them as that meant that they would soon be free-

A father watched this all happen, his expression numb.

He followed soon after his death, all his limbs and head tied to five horses, all running in separate directions.

The men and all involved cheered and made bets.

"Which horse would get the largest chunk of meat?"

They laughed, they jeered, they made sport of the life a family of four had. A simple and happy life, a life far from the chaos of conflict.

They were turned into monsters, beings who did not deserve to be called human.

Their lives turned into a mere joke-

The perpetrators… they all believed it was over, they believed they had "rid the world of sin".

They paraded the corpses of the family of three.

They called the magus monsters who deserved their fate. They called magecraft an upfront to the God's, a power that should not exist and they simply cleansed the world of sin.

What they didn't know was that the family had long forsaken magecraft, the sole reason the family fell victim to their act was because none of the three victims resisted-

Even as they faced the horrors of man, the three magi did not act-

Save for one-

A boy who had talent, a boy who did not forsake magecraft-

When the attack happened, his mother had cast a spell, one that erased him from the memories of those that enter the manor.

All evidence of his existence was erased, he became a ghost-

Within the walls of the manor, he hid, he watched and he held back.

The pain, the agony, the despair-

I… only wanted to have a peaceful life, a happy family…

Yet- the world doesn't seem to wish that for you-

I… I was not in the right state of mind… that was a sin-

Is it?

That was not the right thing… that was- excessive-

Was it?

Too many innocents died! That was not supposed to be-

Is that why you never used it? The weapons that bore them? The true evil you destroyed?

You caused chaos, you enacted your vengeance.

That was murder-

So your family deserved to die?

That-

The women who watched their husbands violate your mother and sister, the brothers who joined in, the elderly who clapped along.

Were they all innocent?

Where was justice?

Where was the innocence?

The flames of madness had consumed them all!

THEY WERE NEVER INNOCENT!

NONE OF THEM WERE!

THEY DID NOT DESERVE SUCH A FATE!

WHAT DID THEY DESERVE THEN?

I…

Don't know

Don't know

Your indecision is what caused you to nearly face death! Why did you not use your chains? Why did you not use curses? The minotaur would not have been much of a problem if you had only used your true strength!

Coward! All you do is spend the day wallowing in your "sin" you use weapons made from the blood and despair of "innocents", a reminder of you "sin". THAT'S YOUR MADNESS!

DELUSION!

INDECISION!

COWARDICE!

I'll show you, the true strength that you should have-

I-

Ryuta's consciousness faded to black, the memories of his life turning into black shackles that held him back.

Why… Do these shackles feel warm?

The "him" who he had sealed, the man who he kept hidden away-

Was released-
