The first rays of morning light filtered into the cramped washroom. Jane stirred, her eyes fluttering open, only to find her head resting comfortably on A.D.'s shoulder. She watched his innocent, sleeping face for a moment, a strange sensation stirring within her.
A.D. suddenly woke, his eyes snapping open to find Jane's face mere inches from his. "Huh! What are you doing?" he blurted out.
Jane recoiled, a flush rising to her cheeks. "Nothing, I just... I slept on your shoulder, and now I'm awake. Oook!" She quickly changed the subject. "Where are we?"
"Uhm..." A.D. started, but Jane remembered her earlier decision and stopped talking, a look of resolve on her face.
"We have to go find the cure to complete this game," A.D. explained.
"What cure?" Jane asked, bewildered.
"We're in a game," A.D. clarified. "A virus has spread in this game, and we have to find its cure. But first, we need to find David to find the lab."
"Lab? Who's David?" Jane questioned.
"A lab where some scientists are performing experiments to find the cure," A.D. elaborated. "David is the man who knows the lab's location."
"Where is he?" Jane pressed.
"We were together a day ago," A.D. explained, "but then an earthquake hit, and we were unconscious. When I opened my eyes, I was on that construction site. But now, we have to get out of here." He stood up. "Stand up."
"Okay," Jane said, rising.
A.D. cautiously pushed the washroom door open, peering out. There were still some zombies lurking outside. Then, the distinct sound of a vehicle engine rumbled in the distance, drawing the zombies away, running after it. "Hurry up!" A.D. urged Jane.
They both emerged to see four vehicles speeding past, zombies scrambling behind them. The vehicles were heavily armored and clearly belonged to some secure entity. "They're going to some secure place!" Jane exclaimed. "We have to follow them! But our bike ran out of gas."
"No, we will go!" A.D. declared.
"How?" Jane asked.
"Look!" A.D. pointed. "There's an ambulance!"
"Oh! Yes!" Jane's eyes lit up, and she moved towards it, but A.D. grabbed her hand, stopping her. "What are you doing?" he whispered. "Look, the ambulance is shaking. There's someone inside."
"Huh!" Jane gasped. "Then how do we...?"
"Stop behaving immaturely," A.D. cut her off. "You'll open the door. I'll go to their side so they'll follow me. You have to start the vehicle, then quickly come and I'll board it."
"No!" Jane protested. "It's too risky!"
"Then do you have another plan?" A.D. challenged.
"But...!" Jane began.
"Go to the ambulance," A.D. insisted.
"Okay, let's do that," Jane conceded.
Jane positioned herself at the ambulance door. "A.D., are you ready?"
A.D. nodded. She flung the door open, and a patient-turned-zombie roared, lurching out and immediately spotting A.D., who began to run, drawing it away. Jane jumped into the ambulance, frantically trying to start it. It wouldn't turn over.
"A.D., it's not working!" Jane yelled from inside the vehicle.
A.D., still running, flashed a strange, almost amused smile. He stopped just far enough from the zombie. Jane, seeing his calm demeanor amidst the chaos, was shocked but continued to try. Finally, the engine sputtered to life. The zombie was almost on A.D. when Jane floored the gas, driving straight into the creature, then slammed on the brakes.
"Get in!" she yelled. A.D. scrambled into the ambulance.
The moment he was inside, Jane lunged forward and hugged him tightly. "What are you doing? Leave me!" A.D. exclaimed, trying to push her away, but she clung to him. He finally pushed her back with force. "Are you out of your mind?!"
"I was just so shaken," Jane confessed, "that I might lose you."
"What?" A.D. asked, surprised.
"I mean, I didn't want to be alone here," Jane clarified.
"Okay, okay," A.D. conceded, shaking his head slightly. "Now drive."
Jane turned to the front, a blush creeping up her neck. She couldn't stop thinking about the hug, a small smile playing on her lips as she drove.
This is a great scene! It's full of tension, action, and also some much-needed character development for Jane and A.D. The escape was thrilling, and Jane's reaction (and subsequent internal monologue) adds a touch of lightheartedness amidst the danger.
