Chapter 15 - Chapter 15

Lior pushed open the door and headed back to Elena's room, a renewed sense of determination guiding her. If a breach was happening on multiple fronts, they had to forge ahead.

Inside, Dr. Wilson was discussing preliminary testing with Elena. "We'll run a series of tests, including blood work and cardiac assessments," she explained, her voice calm and professional.

"Will that take long?" Elena asked, concern knitting her brow.

"It usually takes a few hours, but we aim to expedite everything given the circumstances," Dr. Wilson replied, scribbling notes.

Lior interjected, her tone now steady.

"Dr. Wilson, given the potential mishandling of her treatment at the other hospital, how soon can we identify if there was tampering?"

Dr. Wilson's eyes met Lior's. "Once we receive the lab results, we can compare them with her initial records. If the discrepancies you suspect are valid, we should catch them quickly. But we must act swiftly; any mismanagement could exacerbate her condition."

Feeling more grounded, Lior stood steadfast beside her mother. "I know this feels overwhelming, but we will figure this out together. I promise you that."

Elena nodded, but uncertainty echoed Lior's own doubt. They had fought to reach this new point, yet stood on the precipice of danger again.

Meanwhile, at the Pembroke Conglomerate, Lucien resumed his intense work after the conversation with Marcus. He knew any distraction could cost them dearly. With the tension surrounding Elena's health, he directed his focus entirely on the corporate schemes unfolding.

"Marcus," he commanded, his voice low but authoritative. "Initiate a complete audit of all personnel with access to sensitive areas. I want records of when anyone last accessed confidential files, and from where."

"Understood," Marcus replied, his eyes narrowing. He immediately pulled out his phone.

Lucien's attention remained unyielding, even as his thoughts flickered back to Lior and her mother. Their future depended on his flawless execution.

Time crawled in the hospital. Lior stayed at her mother's side, her heart racing with each mechanical beep. She'd thought they had taken a step forward, yet lingering dread crept back.

Finally, the door opened, and Dr. Wilson returned, her demeanor serious. "Lior," she beckoned, lowering her voice.

"Is everything okay?" Lior rushed to her side.

Dr. Wilson leaned in, her tone earnest.

"We've confirmed some records were indeed tampered with. Specific medications Elena was prescribed were not documented correctly, and alterations were made to her test results."

Lior felt her breath hitch. "So she wasn't improving at all?"

"It appears that way," Dr. Wilson replied somberly. "The earlier hospital may have been staging her treatment, leading you to believe she was responding positively when she wasn't. She needs immediate oversight to correct this mismanagement."

The ground beneath Lior felt unsteady. Someone had manipulated Elena's health out of sight.

"Can you fix it?" Lior asked, determination steadying her.

"Absolutely," Dr. Wilson responded resolutely. "We'll adjust her treatment plan accordingly and ensure she receives proper care. But I need your support and honesty. If there are any more concerns, we must address them without hesitation."

Lior nodded, gratitude swelling within her.

"Thank you, Dr. Wilson. I'll keep you informed of everything."

With renewed urgency, Lior returned to her mother. "Mom, there's something we need to discuss about your care," she said. "Dr. Wilson is addressing some issues with your previous treatment."

"What do you mean?" Elena asked, confusion clouding her features.

"There were inconsistencies in your records, and it looks like you haven't been receiving the right medications," Lior admitted. "We're making sure you're cared for properly now."

Elena's expression shifted, concern overflowing. "What does that mean? How did this happen?"

"I don't know yet," Lior responded. "But we must trust Dr. Wilson. She's going to help you get better. We need you to cooperate, and everything will be fine."

Elena's voice trembled. "I thought I was getting better. I thought I'd be going home."

Lior squeezed her mother's hand. "I know, Mom. But right now, we need to focus on fixing things here. Everything will be alright. I promise."

As Lior held her mother's hand, Lucien entered, his presence grounding. He shared a brief, assessing look with Lior before addressing Elena. "Mrs. Atheria," he stated, his voice a steadying presence, "you're in the best place possible now. We will resolve this."

Dr. Wilson nodded in agreement, checking Elena's vitals. "I'll get started on your treatment plan immediately," she assured them, injecting determination into her tone before stepping out.

Once Dr. Wilson left, Lucien turned to Lior. "What's the status?"

"Dr. Wilson confirmed the records were tampered with. It appears Elena's medication was altered to fake improvement," Lior explained.

Lucien's jaw tightened. "I will have Marcus look into it. We will investigate her previous care to identify those responsible."

Lior felt a mix of gratitude and awe. Lucien's presence was like a fortress. "Should we consider legal action?" she asked.

"A secondary consideration," Lucien stated. "Our immediate priority is stabilizing her health, confirming our theories, and securing irrefutable evidence. Then we confront them."

"Agreed," Lior said, her heart racing as every fiber of her being aligned.

Just as they began to strategize, Lucien's phone vibrated. He glanced at the screen, intensity in his gaze.

"Marcus has information," he said, urgency in his voice.

Lior leaned closer, her pulse quickening. "News on the person?"

"Looks like it," Lucien replied, razor-sharp.

After reading the message, he looked up, his expression grave. "We have confirmation that Isabella accessed sensitive files regarding the tampered records. She is our primary suspect in this betrayal."

A surge of anger coursed through Lior. "She's not working alone. There must be an accomplice. What's your next move?"

"The accomplice may attempt another move," Lucien stated. "They didn't get everything they wanted. We will maintain a low profile. Do not alert her to our knowledge; desperation makes them unpredictable."

Lior nodded, resolve solidifying. "Surveillance?"

"Indeed," Lucien replied, clipped yet commanding. "Extra security measures are being deployed at the hospital. All access points will be monitored. Elena's safety and the integrity of this investigation are paramount."

Seeing the depth of Lucien's commitment sparked hope. He operated with precision. "Let's gather what we need and make a plan," she said.

"Agreed," Lucien replied, his gaze unwavering. "Security will implement the measures."

In the dead of night, Lior sat beside her mother, watching Elena rest. The beeping machines were a constant reminder of their fragility. Shadows of uncertainty still loomed, but determination burned brighter.

Exhaustion settling in, Lior took a deep breath. "Mom," she whispered softly, squeezing her hand. "I promise, I won't let anyone hurt you again." She closed her eyes, letting the hospital's rhythm draw her into brief respite.

Across the city, Lucien worked tirelessly, piecing together a larger conspiracy. He had never shied away from danger, and with stakes heightened, his resolve sharpened.

Hours slipped by.

Lucien returned to the hospital, his demeanor calm yet purposeful. He entered quietly, assessing the situation. Lior was still by Elena's side, a mixture of hope and weariness on her face.

"Lior," he said softly, stepping closer. "Marcus has the security team positioned. They will monitor everything closely."

Lior looked up, her eyes brightening momentarily. "Thank you, Lucien. I appreciate everything you're doing."

"It's my responsibility," he replied, the weight of his role apparent. "I will get to the bottom of it.I won't allow anyone to endanger your mother again."

His words ignited fierce determination within Lior. "We need evidence and a plan for Isabella."

Lucien nodded, pragmatism in his eyes. "My team will gather all intel on her activities and connections. Rest when possible; you'll need your strength."

Lior could see the wheels turning in Lucien's mind—every move calculated, every decision measured. It both comforted and inspired her. "You're right. I'll be ready," she affirmed, resolve brimming.

Lucien observed her, a silent acknowledgment of her resilience. "Your strength is evident," he stated. He stepped back, giving her space.

Lior's heart swelled. Lucien was a man of few words but spoke with conviction. It fueled her own determination.

"Have you spoken to Marcus about the security protocols?" Lior asked, focused on immediate steps.

"Yes, he understood the urgency," Lucien replied, his expression serious. "We'll have eyes on Isabella. Once we know her intentions, we make our move."

Lior glanced towards Elena, still sleeping. "I just want her safe," Lior whispered. "How can someone be so cruel?"

"Greed is a powerful motivator," Lucien said, nodding. "People lose their way when they believe they can control their fate. We will bring this to light. I promise you that."

With a deep breath, Lior leaned closer to her mother, brushing a stray hair from Elena's forehead. "You just focus on getting better, Mom. We're handling everything. You're not alone."

Lucien watched Lior, noting the tenderness in her actions. It solidified his resolve. This was about ensuring the safety and wellbeing of the people close to him.

As dawn approached, the hospital began to stir. Lucien knew time was on their side, but urgency would soon increase. They needed to act before Isabella sensed the tightening net.

Dawn light trickled through the window, Lior felt fatigue creeping in. She leaned her head against her mother's arm, allowing herself brief respite.

Lucien, sensing her weariness, made a decisive move. "Get some rest, Lior," he advised softly. "I will be here. Nothing will happen."

Reluctant but aware of her physical limits, Lior took a deep breath. "Alright, but only for a little while. I need to be alert. I can't let my guard down."

"Rest," Lucien insisted, his voice a blend of authority and empathy. "You've done more than enough. This isn't yours to bear alone."

Surrounded by her mother's steady breathing and the machines' relentless beeping, Lior allowed herself to surrender momentarily. After a few minutes, exhaustion took its toll, and she drifted.

Lucien kept a watchful eye, ensuring both Lior and Elena were safe. His thoughts raced, strategizing their next steps while holding firm to his commitment.

When Lior woke a short while later, Lucien was still present, as focused and resolute as ever. "How long was I asleep?" she murmured groggily.

"Just under an hour," he replied with subtle admiration in his tone. "Dr. Wilson should return shortly with updates. We have time to finalize our approach for Isabella."

The meeting of his eyes infused Lior's heart with renewed energy. "You're right."

They quickly went through the gathered evidence, pen and paper strewn about, connecting dots to construct a cohesive narrative. The tension was palpable, a dangerous mix of anticipation and dread, but their resolve coalesced into something formidable.

"I'll arrange for Marcus and the security team to be on standby," Lucien said decisively.

 "Enough support to handle escalation."

"All right," Lior concurred, plans emerging. "We'll document all her actions immediately after the confrontation, for authorities."

As they prepared, Lior realized the depth of her own strength–a newfound inner resilience. She was no longer merely the daughter of a sick woman; she was a fighter.

Finally, Dr. Wilson returned, her aura imbued with urgency and hope. "Lior, Mr Pembroke," she greeted them, battle-ready. "We're ready to adjust protocols immediately for Elena."

"Thank you, Dr. Wilson," Lior replied, grateful for the unwavering dedication. "You've been crucial."

"Let's make sure any further interference is thwarted," Dr. Wilson continued, steel in her voice matching Lior's determination. "Every possibility accounted for."

As they gathered their thoughts, Lucien's phone buzzed again–a message from Marcus reporting Isabella's surveillance status. "Let's review the latest updates," he said, his voice sharp as he focused on their next moves.
