Chapter 27 - Astraeus's Retribution

The very air in the Mana Core chamber thrummed with frantic energy. The Celestial Archive pulsed wildly, absorbing the torrent of data streaming from the distant Sentinel Hub, its glyphs shifting at an impossible speed. Aziel, his body aching from the immense strain, maintained his link to the Mana Nexus Amplifier, trying to siphon every last byte of intelligence before Astraeus arrived. Outside, the low rumble of the Shadow Fleet rapidly intensified, a prelude to their imminent, furious return.

"He's here! They're hitting the outer shield with everything!" Kael roared from the entrance, his voice strained as the ground vibrated violently beneath them. Valerius braced his shield against a showering of debris, while Lena launched a series of mana bursts, repelling unseen threats. Rylan, nimble as ever, weaved through the crumbling passages, his improvised sensors screaming warnings.

"Data extraction at 80%!" Koram yelled, his eyes wide with frantic excitement as he monitored the Archive's rapid intake. "Almost there, Aziel! So much information!"

"Hold it, Aziel! He's targeting us directly now!" Jax bellowed, sparks flying from the Amplifier's console as he struggled to reinforce its localized shielding. "He knows what you're doing!"

A terrifying, high-pitched shriek resonated through the mountain, a sound that bypassed physical ears and went straight to the mind. It was Astraeus, no longer a distant presence, but a tangible, enraged entity. A colossal, dark beam of energy, thicker and more potent than anything they had seen, slammed into the mountain's core defenses, making the very air shimmer and warp.

"The mountain won't hold this time!" Seraphina cried, her face pale as she channeled mana, trying to mend the cracking conduits. "He's putting all his power into a single, focused strike!"

Aziel felt the agonizing pressure. Astraeus was aiming to crack the temple, to obliterate the Mana Core and the Amplifier, to erase them all in one fell swoop. He couldn't sustain both the data extraction and a full defensive shield. A choice had to be made.

"Fools! You thought to steal from the Divine Sovereigns?!" Astraeus's voice boomed, now physically manifesting outside the main entrance, his shadowy form larger and more menacing than ever before. "This mountain will be your grave! And your precious 'Archive' will burn with you!"

"Data extraction at 95%!" Koram shrieked, his voice laced with desperation. "Just a little more, Aziel!"

Aziel gritted his teeth, a guttural roar escaping his lips. He poured every ounce of his remaining mana, every fiber of his being, into the data extraction. He would not let his ancestors' sacrifices be in vain. He would not let Astraeus win.

The Mana Nexus Amplifier surged, its purplish light flaring violently. The Celestial Archive glowed blindingly, absorbing the final torrent of information.

"Finished! Data fully transferred!" Koram bellowed, collapsing against the console, utterly drained.

The moment the transfer was complete, Aziel severed the connection to the Sentinel Hub. With a desperate, instantaneous effort, he redirected all his power, all the Mana Core's immense energy, into a massive, concentrated mana-shield around the entire core chamber. The shield flared, a brilliant purple sphere, just as Astraeus's cataclysmic beam slammed into the mountain.

The impact was beyond anything they had experienced. The entire temple screamed in agony. Stone exploded, passages collapsed, and the very air was torn apart by the concussive force. Dust and debris filled the chamber, momentarily blinding them. The Mana Nexus Amplifier shrieked under the strain, its Ethereal Quartz pulsing erratically.

When the dust settled, the chamber was a shambles. Giant cracks spiderwebbed across the walls and ceiling. Portions of the ceiling had collapsed, exposing the raw rock above. Lena, Kael, Valerius, and Rylan were sprawled on the ground, bruised and battered, but alive. The outer passages were gone, obliterated.

"Is everyone... alright?" Lena coughed, slowly pushing herself up, her body aching.

"We live," Kael rasped, his club still clutched in his hand, though his arm trembled.

Valerius groaned, his shield dented but intact. Rylan managed a weak grin. "Well, that was rude."

Aziel, however, was on his knees, trembling, his body radiating waves of heat and exhaustion. He had pushed himself to the absolute brink, saving them but leaving himself utterly vulnerable. The Mana Core within him was flickering, dangerously low.

"He targeted the core directly," Jax said grimly, surveying the damage to the Amplifier. "The power output dropped to critical levels. Aziel absorbed too much of the impact. He's... he's almost out of mana."

Suddenly, the last remaining wall leading to the outside, shattered into dust. Astraeus stood there, framed against the crimson sky, his shadowy form solidifying, radiating an aura of chilling triumph and absolute fury. His cosmic-ice eyes fixed on Aziel, who was struggling to even stand.

"You survive. A mere anomaly, clinging to life," Astraeus's voice echoed, cold and triumphant. "But you are broken. Your Core is drained. Your defiance ends here. The Archive… it will be mine." He took a slow, deliberate step into the ruined chamber, his every movement radiating a crushing weight of power.

Kael, Lena, Valerius, and Rylan immediately moved to defend Aziel, forming a desperate perimeter, their weapons raised despite their exhaustion. Mara, though injured from the tremors, scrambled to their side, her face set in a fierce glare.

"He won't get past us!" Kael bellowed, his voice raw.

"Stay back!" Lena warned, mana gathering at her fingertips despite her fatigue.

Astraeus simply extended a hand, and a wave of oppressive force slammed into them, sending them sprawling backwards, unable to resist. Their meager mana defenses flickered and failed.

"Futile," Astraeus hissed, his gaze never leaving Aziel. He took another step, then another, approaching the kneeling Lord of Mana. His shadowed hand reached out, not for Aziel, but for the now-inert Celestial Archive lying on the stone.

Just as his clawed fingers were about to close around it, Seraphina, her body radiating a faint but resolute glow, flung herself forward. She placed her hands directly on Aziel's back, her eyes closed in intense concentration. A torrent of pure, healing mana flowed from her into Aziel, desperately trying to replenish his depleted Core.

"A healer? A foolish sacrifice," Astraeus scoffed, not even glancing at her. He made to dismiss her with a wave of his hand, but then he hesitated.

A ripple of pure mana, unlike any he had encountered from Aziel before, suddenly erupted from Seraphina. It wasn't raw power; it was a wave of absolute purity, imbued with an overwhelming force of life. It impacted Astraeus like a physical blow, not damaging his form, but causing him to recoil, his shadowy essence flickering violently.

"What is this?! This mana… it is anathema!" Astraeus shrieked, his voice filled with a rare, visceral revulsion. The pure life-mana was like acid to his corrupting shadow form.

Seraphina was pouring her very essence into Aziel, not just healing, but reigniting his connection to the Mana Core. Aziel's eyes snapped open, blazing with a renewed, purplish light. The Mana Core, fueled by Seraphina's sacrifice, pulsed with a fierce, untamed power.

He was still weak, but the connection was re-established. And he felt Seraphina's unwavering belief, her desperate hope, flowing into him. This was not just about his power; it was about the collective will of humanity.

"You will not have it!" Aziel roared, his voice resonating with newfound strength. He forced himself up, facing Astraeus, his amber eyes burning with defiance. The Mana Core behind him thrummed, ready to unleash its stored power. The Cosmic Rebirth would not be extinguished here. Not now. Not ever.
