Chapter 5 - The Test of Hearts and Grades

The atmosphere was still buzzing with whispers from the hallway gossip as Yuta, Mai, Erika, Yuki, Amane, and Izumi walked into their classroom. Curious eyes followed them, and the low murmurs didn't stop even when they took their seats.

But soon the bell rang, and the teacher walked in, bringing the class back to attention.

"Everyone, settle down," the teacher said, placing the register on the desk. "Today, I have two announcements. First, there will be a weekly test in Mathematics this Friday. And second… the results of your previous monthly tests are out."

A hush fell over the class as the teacher pulled out the mark sheet.

"And now for something surprising…" the teacher continued. "For the first time since the beginning of high school, someone has outscored Yuki in every subject."

Gasps echoed in the classroom.

"What?!"

"No way!"

"Is that even possible?!"

The teacher smiled and turned toward one particular student.

"That student is… Kamado Yuta."

The classroom exploded in chatter and shock.

"Wait—Yuta?!"

"That invisible guy from last year?!"

"No way! He even beat Yuki?!"

Even Yuki herself looked surprised, her eyes widening as she turned to glance at Yuta, who sat awkwardly in his chair, scratching his head.

Yuta had scored full marks in every subject.

Yuki had scored between 90% and 98%, a phenomenal result on its own—but for the first time ever, someone had done better.

'He's… amazing,' Yuki thought to herself, feeling a tiny smile creep onto her face. 'So he's not just kind... he's brilliant too.'

Meanwhile, Erika slumped on her desk, devastated. "I… I failed… again."

The teacher's voice pulled the class back. "Erika, Amane, Mai, Izumi — you all need to be more careful. Especially you, Erika. If you fail the upcoming weekly test, you will not be allowed to join the school trip in two weeks."

That announcement crushed Erika even more.

"No trip?!" she whispered, almost in tears. "I wanted to go so bad…"

She turned to Yuta, eyes wide and pleading.

"Yuta… please help me study. I… I don't want to fail again."

The classroom fell silent.

All eyes turned to Yuta.

Yuta looked at Erika, smiled confidently, and said:

"Don't worry, Erika. I'm here for you. I'll make sure you pass this time — no matter what."

He said it like a hero.

Gasps filled the room again.

"Did he just…?"

"He's like a real-life shoujo manga MC!"

Girls started blushing. Even Erika turned pink.

'Why does that sound like a love confession…?' she thought.

'He's so cool…' several girls whispered at once.

Yuta blinked. 'Why is everyone looking at me like that again?!'

And just like that… Yuta Kamado gained even more unwanted attention.

As the school day ended, students began packing up to head home. The atmosphere was still buzzing from the shocking test results, especially with Yuta suddenly becoming the center of attention.

Yuta stood from his seat, slinging his bag over his shoulder, ready to walk out…

But suddenly—

A crowd of tall senior students blocked the classroom door.

The air changed.

Whispers erupted through the classroom.

"Wait... aren't they from the third-year student council group?"

"What do they want with Yuta?!"

"Are they... here to beat him up?!"

Amane and Izumi immediately stood up, Mai looked worried, and Yuki narrowed her eyes, ready to step in if needed. Even Erika stood behind her desk, tense.

Yuta blinked as the crowd of seniors slowly stepped in.

But instead of anger or violence…

They bowed.

Everyone gasped.

"W-What?!"

One of the seniors stepped forward with serious eyes."Kamado Yuta-san, we would like to ask you something."

Yuta tilted his head. "Huh…?"

"We want you to run for the position of Student Council Vice President from our group," the senior said confidently."Because you're in 2nd year, you're not eligible to run as President. And the President seat is already taken by our current third-year leader, Shindo Reiji, who's already one of the most popular faces in school."

He continued, "But if you join us as Vice President, we're sure our group will secure all key positions. Your influence is already shaking the school."

Yuta stood there, frozen. The whole classroom went completely silent.

Even the teacher looked surprised.

The senior added, "Another senior group is also aiming for council control. They're popular too, but if you join our side… it'll be no contest."

Students around started whispering again—

"Yuta's becoming too famous…"

"Why does every group want him?!"

"Is he the MC of our school life now?!"

Yuta scratched his head and let out a small sigh.

"Sorry… but I'm not interested."

Everyone went silent again.

The seniors looked shocked. "You're… rejecting?"

Yuta smiled politely. "Yeah. I don't like getting unnecessary attention. I just want a peaceful high school life."

The group nodded slowly. "We understand. But we'll come again tomorrow. Please think about it."

They left the classroom.

Yuta stood there for a second, staring blankly.

'This is getting out of hand… It's like I've become a magnet. People keep coming to me with things I don't want.'

He let out a deep sigh and turned to his roommates.

"I'm heading out to the market for dinner shopping."

After the whole incident with the seniors, Yuta went to the market and returned home, bags in hand. Without wasting time, he went straight into the kitchen to prepare dinner for everyone.

The delicious aroma quickly filled the house.

One by one, everyone gathered around the dining table as plates were served.

Amane took the first bite and his eyes widened. "Ahhh! This is heaven!"

Mai jumped slightly in her seat, her mouth full. "I told you! Chef-kun is unbeatable!"

Izumi grinned. "I would marry this food."

Erika laughed and raised her spoon. "Yuta! You're officially banned from ever quitting cooking!"

Yuki took a bite and then softly smiled. "It's perfect as always… Thank you."

But then she looked slightly apologetic."Sorry, I couldn't help with the cooking today…"

Izumi blinked. "Huh? Yuki, are you busy now?"

Yuki nodded calmly. "I was checking my exam sheets. I wanted to see if there was any mistake in teacher's numbering."

Amane chuckled. "As always, our academic queen."

He turned to Yuta. "Bro, did you check your papers too?"

Yuta leaned back confidently, sipping water.

"Nope. I don't need to check."A playful smirk spread across his face."Because I got full marks."

Everyone laughed, but Yuki squinted her eyes at Yuta, puffing her cheeks slightly.

"In that case," she said in a mock-serious tone, "I'll beat you in the weekly test."

Yuta gave a small chuckle, folding his arms."Well, time will tell…"

Everyone cheered and laughed around the table, the mood light and full of warmth — even as a small, fun rivalry was born between the two top scorers.

After the fun dinner and teasing moments, everyone slowly started putting their dishes in the sink.

Yuta wiped his hands with a towel and looked at Erika, who was about to go upstairs.

"Erika," he called calmly, "come to the main hall with your books — let's start your study. I told you, I've taken the responsibility to make sure you pass this exam."

Erika's eyes lit up with surprise and a gentle smile appeared on her face."Hai~ Sensei!" she said cheerfully and walked to get her books.

She came down and sat at the dining table near the sofa, placing her books, notebooks, and colorful pens in front of her.

Yuta sat beside her, serious and calm, as he started explaining the first topic slowly.

Meanwhile, Amane stood near the staircase, silently watching both of them.

He felt a small pinch of jealousy in his chest — seeing Erika smile so freely with Yuta.

But at the same time… he smiled.Because deep inside, he was happy for Yuta too.He thought, "He's really changed… A few weeks ago, he couldn't even talk to girls properly. And now… look at him, teaching Erika so confidently."

Amane turned away with a sigh, whispering to himself with a smirk,"Damn… my guy is growing up."

After a long night of studying, Erika was now feeling confident about her upcoming weekly test. Yuta noticed a different glow on her face — she looked determined, bold… and strangely calm.

But what distracted Yuta most was that Erika had changed into her pajamas — a soft, casual look that made her bold figure stand out even more. Yuta tried not to stare. This is exactly why she's so popular on social media… he thought, shaking his head quickly. Focus, Yuta! Focus!

He cleared his throat and said, "So… that's it for today. You studied well."

Erika, visibly tired, nodded sleepily. Then, without any warning, she leaned sideways — and fell asleep right on Yuta's shoulder.

Yuta froze. His face turned bright red.

"W-What are you doing? Erika?" he whispered nervously.

But she was already in deep sleep.

Now Yuta was in full panic mode. What should I do now?

He started calculating his options:

Option 1: Leave her on the sofa?→ No, she could catch a cold.

Option 2: Bring her to her room?→ Impossible. Her door unlocks only with her fingerprint.

Option 3: Wake up one of the girls for help?→ Too risky. It's midnight. It would disturb everyone.

Final Option:Let Erika sleep in my room… and I'll take the sofa.

Yuta sighed. "I guess this is the only way."

He carefully lifted Erika into his arms. As he walked up the stairs, Erika slightly opened her eyes and saw Yuta holding her. A faint smile curled on her lips before she drifted off again.

Yuta gently laid her down on his bed and pulled the blanket over her. As he turned to leave, Erika unconsciously grabbed his collar, pulling him toward the bed.

"W-Whoa…" he muttered, barely avoiding falling on top of her.

He steadied himself, smiled softly, leaned in, and whispered,"Good night, Erika."Then he left the room, grabbed a blanket, and slept on the living room sofa.

Next Morning…

Erika slowly opened her eyes and looked around.

She was in Yuta's room.

So… it wasn't a dream, she thought, remembering how he carried her up and whispered to her. Her cheeks turned red.

As she opened the door to leave, Mai was right outside.

"EH!? Erika? You slept in Yuta's room!?"

Her loud voice echoed across the hallway.

Within seconds, Yuki, Izumi, Amane — all came rushing to the second-floor platform.

"What happened?!"

"Erika?! Yuta's room?!"

"Wait… did something happen?!"

At that very moment, Yuta returned from his morning run, towel over his neck, still sweaty.

"Huh? What's going on?" he asked, clueless.

Mai quickly turned to Erika. "Why were you in his room?!"

Yuta blinked. "Wait… what's the matter?"

Amane snapped, jealousy and confusion written all over his face. "You're seriously asking what the matter is?! Erika slept in your room!!"

Yuta raised his hands and said calmly, "Yes, but nothing happened. She was just sleeping. Alone."

Then he explained the whole scene from the night — the sofa situation, the locked room, the options… and how he made sure Erika was comfortable and safe.

Everyone slowly calmed down.

Erika looked down. "Sorry… and thank you, Yuta."

Yuta smiled. "No worries."

Everyone headed down to breakfast. But Yuki kept glancing at Yuta, thinking to herself:

I… I also want to study with Yuta late at night…

A week passed quickly, and it was time for the weekly test results.

Once again, Yuta scored full marks.

He turned to Yuki with a teasing smile."So… how much did Miss Topper get this time?"

Yuki puffed her cheeks with a cute, angry expression."Don't get cocky…!"

Yuta laughed. "That expression won't help your scores either."

The playful teasing continued, but both were clearly enjoying each other's company.

Then Yuta looked toward Erika."So… how did you do?"

Erika shyly opened her results…She scored higher than Amane, Mai, and Izumi.

Everyone gasped in surprise.

One classmate said, "So Yuta really completed his mission!"

Another girl giggled, "Well… it's Yuta after all."

Amane, Mai, and Izumi groaned and teased him,"You better start teaching us next time too!"

Suddenly, the teacher entered the room and said,"Okay everyone, settle down. I have a big announcement."

The class fell silent.

"Our school trip is officially scheduled for next week — to Mount Fuji. Start your preparations."

Excitement exploded in the room.

The teacher added,"Your groups will be the same as your living arrangements… and the highest scorer in each group will be the group leader."

Mai immediately grinned."So that means our leader is… Yuta."

Yuta froze. "Huh?! Me?!"

He looked at his friends, nervous. Can I really handle this…?

Just then, he caught Yuki's eyes.

She gave him a small, confident nod and mouthed,"I believe in you."

Yuta's heart calmed.

He smiled.

"Yes… I can do it."
