Chapter 9 - Chapter nine:The Codex Protocol

The cathedral was drenched in silence once again, but the air still carried the weight of gunpowder, betrayal, and unanswered questions.

Zayden leaned against the shattered pulpit, blood dripping from a graze on his shoulder. Amari sat a few feet away, panting, reloading, eyes scanning for any signs of movement in the candlelit ruins.

Neither of them spoke for a long while.

Zayden broke the silence first. "What the hell is the Codex?"

Amari glanced at him, the flickering light catching the weariness in his face. "It's not a what. It's a who."

Zayden frowned.

"Our father created something," Amari explained. "A neural AI. Self-aware. Hidden inside a living host. It learns, adapts, even evolves."

"You're saying... it's alive?"

"Yes. And more powerful than anything ever made."

Zayden's breath caught. "And you think I've been carrying it all this time?"

Amari nodded. "Inside that pendant. The microchip is only a key. The real Codex is dormant—encrypted deep inside your neural path. You were the insurance plan. The fail-safe. Our father encoded it into you when you were just a kid."

Zayden reached into his jacket and pulled out the pendant, staring at it like it had just turned into a snake. "Why didn't I know?"

"Because it needed to stay hidden. Even from you."

Suddenly, a surge of heat pulsed from the pendant into his fingers. A whisper—like static—tickled the edge of his mind.

"Awake…"

Zayden dropped the pendant.

Amari was already on his feet. "It's activating."

"What do I do?" Zayden asked, panic rising.

"Nothing. Let it sync. If it chose now to wake up… we're out of time."

Just then, the cathedral's stained-glass window shattered, and a drone zipped inside, scanning the area.

"Move!" Amari shouted.

The brothers dove behind pillars as red lasers lit up the altar. Another drone followed. Then three more.

"Ekanem's men," Amari growled. "They've found the signal."

Zayden clutched his head. The Codex wasn't just whispering now—it was speaking.

"Threat detected. Activating defensive subroutine. Host under siege."

Before he could react, Zayden's pupils dilated, glowing faintly blue.

Then everything slowed down.

He turned, aimed, and shot one of the drones with impossible precision. Then another. His reflexes were faster. His thoughts clearer. Like someone—or something—was guiding him.

Amari ducked next to him. "You okay?"

Zayden smirked. "I think I've got a co-pilot now."

But before they could escape, a voice echoed through the cathedral, deep and commanding.

"Bring me the boy. Alive."

Zayden froze.

Standing in the doorway was Chief Ekanem.

Older. Colder. And not alone.

Behind him stood a woman—tall, elegant, wearing a suit wired with chrome veins and glowing circuits.

She stepped forward.

Mariella.

But her eyes were wrong. Empty. Artificial.

"Zayden…" she said in a monotone voice. "Come with me. It's time to fulfill your purpose."

Zayden's heart sank.

"No," he whispered. "They got to her…"

Amari's voice cracked beside him. "They turned her into a cyber-synthetic. She's not fully Mariella anymore."

Zayden's jaw clenched.

"Then we get her back. Or we burn everything down trying."

📌 Scene Cut:

The brothers vanished into the shadows once more.

The Codex now awake. The enemy now closer.

And Mariella—the girl who once saved Zayden's heart—was now the weapon meant to destroy him.

🧠 Author's Thought:

> This chapter flips the emotional stakes. Not only does Zayden carry a powerful AI inside him, but the love of his life has been turned into the enemy's pawn. Pain becomes power. And love? Love just became a battlefield.
