Chapter 17 - Chapter 17: Hidden Agendas

The anonymous letter had left Ethan wary, each glance over his shoulder now loaded with suspicion. Trust had become a fragile thing, thin as glass. He needed answers—but first, he needed perspective.

He called Sofia.

"Can we meet?"

She hesitated only briefly. "Yes."

"Your place?"

"See you soon."

Conversations and Cats

When Ethan arrived at Sofia's apartment, the familiar scent of coffee and paint greeted him. But so did another scent—cologne.

Marcus's jacket lay casually draped over the armrest.

"Oh," Ethan murmured, heart sinking.

"He just stopped by to pick something up," Sofia explained quickly, reading his reaction. "Nothing else."

Marcus emerged from the kitchen with a relaxed smile. "Hey, Ethan."

"Marcus." Ethan forced politeness into his voice.

Sofia intervened smoothly. "Marcus was just leaving, weren't you?"

Marcus glanced between them, nodded calmly, and moved toward the door. "I'll see you both around."

The door clicked shut, but the tension lingered.

Truth and Doubt

Ethan sighed deeply, sitting on the sofa. Sofia watched him carefully.

"You're jealous," she finally said.

"I'm confused," Ethan corrected. "And lately, everyone around me seems to be hiding something."

Her expression softened. "I'm not."

He met her gaze. "I want to believe you."

She reached out gently, holding his hand. "Then do."

They stayed quiet a moment, until a soft rustle came from the hallway.

Momo, emerging cautiously, paused when she saw Ethan. Then, unexpectedly brave, she approached him and curled up quietly by his side.

Sofia smiled. "She trusts you."

"I wish people were as simple as cats," Ethan murmured, stroking Momo's fur. "She doesn't hide agendas."

Sofia leaned forward slightly. "Neither do I."

But Ethan didn't respond.

Clarity or Confusion

The next day, Ethan's community platform faced renewed turmoil. Members demanded answers, transparency, stability. Marco's pitch deck had leaked, fueling distrust.

Ethan called an emergency livestream. He spoke plainly, honestly, taking responsibility again and promising greater transparency and clear leadership moving forward.

Most responded positively, but questions lingered.

Then his phone buzzed with a message from Marcus:

Meet me at Blue Star Café at noon. It's important. About Sofia—and Marco.

Ethan's heart twisted. Was Marcus genuinely concerned—or plotting something else?

Meeting Marcus

Blue Star Café was crowded at lunchtime. Marcus waited calmly at a corner table, espresso half-empty.

"Thanks for coming," Marcus began. "I know you probably don't trust me."

"You're right," Ethan said flatly.

Marcus exhaled slowly. "Fair enough. But this isn't about us. It's about Sofia."

Ethan leaned back slightly. "What about her?"

Marcus hesitated. "Marco approached me weeks ago. He asked if I'd help him build a rival platform. Something similar, but…bigger. More commercial. He also said Sofia was interested."

Ethan's heart hammered painfully. "You're lying."

Marcus's eyes held steady. "I'm not. Sofia doesn't know he said that. She's loyal to you—more than you realize. But Marco is dangerous. He'll use anyone as leverage."

Ethan's breath grew shallow. "Why should I believe you?"

Marcus slid a USB drive across the table. "Here's everything—emails, conversations. I documented it in case Marco tried to sabotage my agency too."

Ethan pocketed the drive silently, head spinning.

"Why help me?"

Marcus stood, adjusting his jacket. "Because Sofia deserves better. And I think you do too."

Confrontation

That evening, Ethan sat alone, the USB drive glowing softly beside his laptop. He took a deep breath and inserted it.

Every email was there. Marco's promises to Marcus, exaggerated claims about Sofia's involvement, plans to commercialize and sell the platform, even a draft press release announcing Marcus as co-founder.

Ethan felt sick.

How had Marco become this ruthless?

He dialed Marco immediately. Voicemail.

Then he heard a knock.

A Visitor at Midnight

It was Sofia, eyes red from crying.

"What's wrong?" Ethan asked urgently.

"I just found out," she said, trembling. "Marco—he used my name. He lied, Ethan. About everything."

Ethan guided her gently to the couch. "I know. Marcus told me."

She looked at him, startled. "Marcus?"

Ethan nodded slowly. "He showed me proof. Marco's betrayal went deeper than I ever imagined."

She leaned her head against his shoulder, exhausted. "I'm so sorry I didn't see it."

He wrapped his arm around her gently. "Neither did I. But I trust you now."

Her voice was soft. "Then we have to fix this."

An Unexpected Ally

The next morning, an anonymous text woke Ethan early:

The letter wasn't a threat—it was a warning. Marco isn't working alone. You're safer than you think. Keep digging.

Ethan stared at the message.

Who was helping him?

Why anonymously?

Shadows Revealed

In the evening, another message appeared:

Check your mailbox again.

Ethan raced downstairs. Another envelope waited, heavier this time.

Inside, a stack of photographs.

Marco meeting someone Ethan didn't recognize—older, serious. On the last photo, Ethan saw Marco accepting a thick envelope. Cash?

He flipped the photo over.

A note:

You're dealing with something bigger. Marco's just a pawn.

Ethan felt a chill.

Who was the real enemy?

Who was manipulating them all?

He glanced around, suddenly aware of the heavy quiet of the empty street, shadows deeper than before.

Whatever this was, Ethan knew one thing clearly:

The real danger had only just begun.
