Chapter 3 - Chapter Three

The fairy king's forest stands as a shield protecting the lands beyond in Rastien from the creatures of the night that inhabit the enchanted forest.

The rainbow coloured trees enshroud the base of a fortress hidden deep within the fairy king's forest.

The outer shell of the fortress is covered with spikes deterring and invoking fear in any intruders. The colossal structure towered over any and all that would come near leaving them with a sense of hopelessness.

To those that resided in the fortress it is also known as a school, a sanctuary for witches that live in Et'Dwarda protected from the dangers of the rest of the world.

In a room on the highest level of the sanctuary where only the most powerful of witches are allowed access to. Alone in the room a woman stands, snakes made of fire danced around her listening to her commands as they slithered through the air.

"Seraphine come to the grand hall." A regal voice came from down the hall. Seraphine lost her concentration dissipating her flame snakes. Her dark purple hair fluttered around her as her magic dispelled itself.

'Are they finally allowing me to go on a mission.' Seraphine thought, 'I'll finally be able to enter the overseer's library.'

Seraphine moved through the halls. Her purple cloak billowed behind her making her seem bigger than she was.

Entering the teleportation circle at the end of the hall she was taken to the base floor of the sanctuary.

'There hasn't been a mission or even a simple quest in a couple of years.' Seraphine thought, the chances of her being given a mission seemed to lower with every step she took.

'Maybe they just want to see my progress.' The thought of getting to go on a mission almost completely left her mind.

Entering the hall Seraphine looked around the room she had entered many times in times past when being tested by the council. Noticing that the majority of the overseers seemed to not be present, only three dozen witches sat in the hall above casting their judgement down on her.

"Seraphine, you have been given the honour to complete a mission!" One of the many witches above said, her voice boomed out across the hall causing Seraphine's ear to ring.

"Don't shout." Another witch said, a soft voice barely a whisper but still carried throughout the room causing the first witch to freeze in fear, quickly chased away with a cold stare.

"Seraphine we're giving you a mission, if you are to succeed you will be sitting amongst us as an overseer." The second finished giving Seraphine a kind smile.

"Don't worry I won't fail you overseer Magif." Seraphine excitedly said.

"Yes." Overseer Magif slowly drawled out, surprised by the sudden outburst from the usually composed Seraphine.

"There is a witch working with a vampire in the forbidden forest. Your mission is to eliminate the vampire and capture the witch."

Seraphine stared at overseer Magif waiting for more information.

Overseer Salzei continued from Magif. "We don't know the exact strength of the witch aiding the vampire but she shouldn't be stronger than yourself. The vampire you need to eliminate his name is Jaskidon. His castle is located on the south side of the enchanted forest. There is a teleportation circle that will take you to an outpost near the living forest."

'If they're giving me a mission I must be as strong as an overseer now.' Seraphine thought.

"When should I leave?" Seraphine asked.

"Immediately, but there is one more thing you need to look out for. This isn't a part of your official mission but holds far more importance than your other two objectives." A third overseer said, causing Seraphine to look at her confused.

"Why should this be hidden?" Seraphine said with some worry now knowing why the majority of the council isn't present for the issuing of this mission.

"It is Sadine's orb, an artefact of great power. We need to keep this hidden." The third overseer emphasised the importance of the secretive nature of this objective.

"Of course overseer Lynn, could I have a description of this orb or what it does?" Seraphine questioned looking towards the three overseers.

"We don't know what it looks like." Overseer Lynn said firmly.

"But we do know that you should be able to feel it when you are near, it should be near Jaskidon's castle as he too is searching for it."

"So I just need to kill the vampire, steal the orb and bring the witch here." Seraphine said, noting everything she must do to become an overseer.

"Retrieve, not steal." Overseer Lynn said.

"Don't worry I can do it." Seraphine said.

"Remember the orb is of the highest importance, the rest can be done at your leisure." Overseer Lynn said.

Seraphine nodded her head to the overseer. "I will get some supplies and then I will leave as soon as I can." Seraphine said as she walked to the door leaving the grand hall.

Watching her leave the room overseer Magif watched as the door slammed behind Seraphine.

"She will be fine Magif." Overseer Lynn said, knowing Magif to have raised Seraphine herself.

"I'm more worried about her becoming an overseer, she is still far too childish." Overseer Magif said that knowing Seraphine was thinking less about the responsibilities of an overseer but more on what she can gain as one.

Entering her room Seraphine let a smile bloom onto her face as she gathered her tools and supplies for her trip. She left her room and rushed to the armoury located in the underground level of the sanctuary to retrieve her staff.

She entered the armoury pulling her staff from the shelf it was resting on.

"Seraphine, where are you going?" The witch incharge of the armoury asked Seraphine knowing she was banned from using her staff inside of the sanctuary.

"I've been given a mission." Seraphine said with pride.

"To do what? A mission has been given to a witch for over a decade." The witch said.

"Hunt down a vampire and capture some rogue witch in the enchanted forest." Seraphine said making sure not to allude to her main objective of the orb.

"You shouldn't have too much trouble, vampires nowadays aren't that strong after Galdore killed all the vampire lords four hundred years ago." The witch replied happily.

"Yeah, I know Lusen." Seraphine said.

"When are you setting out?" Lucen said.

"Later today I still need to get some stuff together." Seraphine said excitedly.

"Oh" Lucen exclaims, surprised at the suddenness of the mission. "Well good luck, and if you need anything just ask."

"Don't worry I will. See you later." Seraphine said leaving the armoury with her staff in hand.

Walking past all the other witches on the bottom floor of the sanctuary Seraphine reached the storage room to pick up a magic pouch capable of holding a mountain worth of items.

Entering the room she moved past the countless other magic items until she reached the pouch. She picked up the pouch and attached it to her belt, securing it onto her person.

'If he has something like the orb he must have other artefacts as well. He won't be needing them anymore.' Seraphine thought.

Leaving the storage room with the pouch firmly attached to her belt she had gathered all the necessary equipment she needed to defeat the vampire and retrieve the orb.

Entering the teleportation room Seraphine looked through all the teleportation circles with at least one located in each of the different lands even including Hi'Ela the home of the high elves.

Standing on the teleportation circle for the enchanted forest, Seraphine was instantly transported to a cave in the enchanted forest with powerful magic keeping it hidden from the residents of the enchanted forest.

Looking around Seraphine noticed that the enchanted forest famed for being cast into an eternal darkness was not as dark as she was led to believe.

A dark silvery light illuminated the forest allowing for perfect vision even for a human like her.

'This type of light is quite beautiful.' She thought.

Exiting the cave the magic washed over her. Moving down the dirt path leading out from the cave she saw a signpost.

The names on the sign had faded to time leaving nothing but blank directions to anyone unfortunate enough to be lost in the enchanted forest.

'I don't know where to go. I can't return immediately, I will just have to get directions from the first person I meet.' Seraphine thought.

Picking one of the paths Seraphine walked past the sign. The silvery light of the enchanted forest thickened, and a deep fog covered her sight.

Walking down the path Seraphine started to feel multiple gazes coming from the forest. The trees of the forest seem to grow in size as she moves deeper within the forest. The branches of the trees entwined with one another blocking any from leaving the path from the side.

The trees swayed to a rhythm only they could hear. The branches danced with the wind drawing Seraphine's limited sight.

'There has to be someone watching me. I can feel their gaze, but I can't sense anyone. It must be nothing. Animals? Maybe it is just how the enchanted forest feels like.' She thought.

"This is easy." Seraphine said out loud trying to calm her nerves.

As she took another step a root emerged from the ground and wrapped around her leg tightening when it took hold of her.

Feeling her bones start to crack Seraphine tried to create her flame snakes but the pain caused them to disappear as soon as they appeared.

She saw other roots emerge from the ground. Seraphine grabbed her staff, channelling her magic through it. She swung it in a wide arc causing a burst of fire to appear from her staff, completely incinerating the roots surrounding her.

Seeing all the roots completely gone Seraphine tried to sense the area around.

'Why can't I sense anything? Are they dead? No. I just need to stay still and wait.' She thought.

Seraphine composed herself. Instead of trying to sense magic she tried to sense any life, she closed her eyes. Sending out her magic in pulses she saw everything around her focusing her mind she saw all the living animals and plants around herself.

Noticing that some of the trees that surround her have two different types of life energy, a green and red. Using her staff she slammed the end into the ground causing a wave of flames to surround her, and spread incinerating both the different types of trees creating a clear area around her.

She took control of the dispersing flames turning them into snakes of flames that formed a cocoon of fire around her. The snakes whipped around the cocoon turning the trees into burnt splitters. Flames that covered the clearing spread throughout the forest turning the trees to ash.

Seraphine watched as the living forest of the enchanted forest turned into ash and fire.
