Chapter 10 - chapter 10

The excitement over the new house, a tangible blueprint of their future, hummed beneath the surface of the penthouse. Liam, with Elijah's encouragement, had thrown himself into the design process, his artistic eye envisioning sunlit playrooms and a sprawling backyard garden where Maya could truly run free. Elijah watched him, a deep satisfaction settling in his chest. This home was a declaration, a foundation laid against the shifting sands of Naomi's return. But the sands were shifting faster than anticipated.

Naomi's previous attempts – the legal threats, the flimsy smear campaign – had met Elijah's formidable defenses and crumbled. Her desperate calls to his lawyers were now summarily dismissed. She was running out of avenues, and, Elijah knew from his discreet inquiries, running out of money. That made her infinitely more dangerous. A cornered animal.

The first palpable escalation came a week after the house plans were finalized. Liam had taken Maya to the Natural History Museum, a scheduled outing with a security detail discreetly shadowing them. They were admiring a particularly magnificent dinosaur skeleton when a woman, her face partially obscured by a wide-brimmed hat and oversized sunglasses, moved with unsettling speed towards Maya.

Liam's Omega instincts shrieked. He didn't recognize her face, but a primal alarm blared in his mind. The woman moved with an unnerving, predatory focus, not towards him or the security guard, but directly for Maya, a desperate hunger in her eyes. Liam reacted instantly, scooping Maya into his arms and pivoting sharply, shielding her with his body.

One of Elijah's security personnel, a former special forces operative named Marcus, stepped between them, his presence suddenly solid and intimidating. The woman hesitated, her eyes blazing with frustrated rage, then melted back into the crowd.

Liam's heart hammered against his ribs, Maya clinging to him, her small body trembling. "Are you alright, sweet pea?" he whispered, his voice shaky. He felt a cold dread seep into his bones. This wasn't just about money anymore. This was personal. This was a direct attempt.

That evening, Elijah's Alpha fury was a cold, terrifying thing. He sat at the polished table, reviewing Marcus's report, his jaw clenched so tight Liam thought it might shatter. "She's losing control," Elijah stated, his voice flat, devoid of emotion, which was far more unsettling than any shout. "She was willing to risk public exposure, even arrest, for a chance."

"We need to be more careful, Elijah," Liam said, his own fear still raw. He couldn't shake the image of that woman's eyes, the calculating greed. "Maya…"

"I know," Elijah interrupted, rising to pace. "I'm already working on reinforcing every point of vulnerability. But she's desperate. And desperation breeds recklessness."

Naomi's escalation didn't stop there. The harassing messages intensified, no longer just veiled threats but unsettlingly specific. Elijah's legal team identified a new burner phone number she was using. One evening, Liam's personal phone, a number only a handful of people had, buzzed with an unknown caller. He almost didn't answer, but something compelled him.

"Liam?" A sickly sweet voice, laced with a false intimacy he instinctively recoiled from. "It's Naomi. Maya's mother."

Liam's hand tightened around the phone. He glanced over at Elijah, who was on a work call in his study. "What do you want, Naomi?" His voice was cold, harder than he thought possible.

"Oh, Liam," she purred, a theatrical sigh on the other end. "I just want to see my daughter. And Elijah is being utterly unreasonable. Don't you think Maya needs her real mother? We could work something out, you and I. A little cut for your trouble, if you just help me spend some time with her. I know you're not like him."

Liam felt a surge of disgust, a fierce loyalty to the man in the next room, to the child who trusted him implicitly. "You abandoned her, Naomi. You have no rights. And I want nothing from you. Don't call this number again. Don't ever contact me again." He hung up, his hand trembling slightly.

He told Elijah everything. Elijah's eyes blazed, his Alpha anger barely contained. "She tried to turn you against me," he growled, the possessiveness evident in his tone. "The audacity."

The constant threat began to take its toll on Liam. He found himself sleeping less, waking at every creak of the floorboards, his senses on high alert even when he was off duty. His bright smile was often tinged with a weariness that even Elijah's care couldn't fully erase. Maya, though still innocent of the full danger, began to pick up on their underlying tension. She would sometimes cling more, her eyes wide and watchful, asking, "Why does Liam look sad, Daddy?" or "Are you angry, Daddy?" Her questions, so innocent, twisted the knife of worry deeper into both men's hearts.

The constant pressure, while terrifying, forged Elijah and Liam into an even more unbreakable unit. Their unspoken mate bond tightened under the strain, a steel cable holding them together. They moved through their days as one, a seamless partnership of vigilance and comfort. Elijah shared every security update, every new piece of information, trusting Liam's keen judgment. Liam, in turn, offered quiet strength, his presence a calming balm to Elijah's simmering rage. Their shared resolve to protect Maya, no matter the cost, was their absolute North Star.

One tense evening, after reviewing the latest, most disturbing security report—Naomi's desperation was becoming outright deranged—Elijah gripped Liam's hand tightly. "She's cornered," he stated, his voice low and grim. "She's desperate. And desperate people... they do desperate things."

Liam squeezed his hand back, meeting Elijah's gaze, his own eyes reflecting the shared fear and grim determination. They both knew it. Naomi's erratic behavior, her increasingly bold attempts, were leading to an inevitable, dangerous climax. The storm wasn't just gathering; it was about to break
