Chapter 30 - chapter 30

The morning sun, already fierce, began to climb over the distant desert peaks, promising another cloudless day near Lake Mead. Theo was up early, his usual routine infused with a new, almost frantic anticipation. The phone call he'd made yesterday, the promise of the ring's arrival, had set a new clock ticking inside him – one of profound hope, not dread.

He brewed espresso, the rich aroma filling the RV. Remy was still asleep, sprawled across the king-sized bed, her discarded notebook with its hopeful new "things to do because I have all the time in the world" list lying open on the floor. He watched her, a soft, indulgent smile touching his lips. Her world had transformed, and he was the one who had cleared the path. Now, he just needed the physical symbol to seal the promise.

His burner phone, tucked discreetly into his pocket, vibrated. One buzz. The signal. Theo's heart gave a fierce leap against his ribs. He knew who it was. The lackey. The ring was here.

"I'll be right back," he murmured to the sleeping Remy, pressing a light kiss to her forehead.

He slipped out of the RV, the cool morning air a sharp contrast to the warmth inside. He walked quickly, efficiently, towards the designated drop-off point – a large, strategically placed boulder at the edge of the resort, just out of sight of the main roads.

A nondescript sedan, blending perfectly into the upscale resort's parking area, was already waiting. The driver, a young man with sharp eyes and an even sharper suit, gave a respectful nod as Theo approached. He didn't speak, simply reached into the back seat and retrieved a small, velvet-covered box, handing it to Theo with a deferential bow of his head.

Theo took the box. It felt surprisingly heavy in his palm, weighted not by its size, but by the monumental promise it contained. He gave the driver a terse, "Good work," and the sedan melted away as silently as it had appeared.

He didn't open the box immediately. He held it, feeling the smooth velvet beneath his thumb, the cool metal inside. This wasn't just a piece of jewelry. This was forever. This was the culmination of a journey he never expected, a love he never anticipated. This was a future. With Remy. He walked back to the RV, the small box clutched tight in his hand, a fierce, protective joy bubbling in his chest.

When he re-entered the RV, Remy was stirring, stretching languidly. "Morning, Theo," she mumbled, her voice thick with sleep. "Did I miss the sunrise? It's okay, I figured you were out having a top-secret mafia meeting with the squirrels." She yawned, then sat up, rubbing her eyes. "Coffee? Or are we skipping straight to the artisanal goat cheese and chupacabra theories today?"

Theo managed a soft chuckle, a genuine sound that surprised even him. He set the velvet box on the counter, just out of Remy's direct line of sight, subtly covering it with a folded map. He poured her coffee, his gaze lingering on her. She was so gloriously, beautifully unaware of the magnitude of the object just inches from her.

"Coffee," he said, handing her a mug. "And then, perhaps, more planning."

Remy brightened. "Oh, good! I've been thinking. Now that I don't have to rush everything, maybe I should specialize. Like, I could become the world's foremost expert on giant vegetables. Or historical pie. What do you think, Theo? A new life goal? It takes years of dedication, but I've got 'em now!" Her eyes sparkled with renewed enthusiasm, a vibrant testament to the endless possibilities that had suddenly unfurled before her.

Theo watched her, his heart swelling with a mix of awe and profound love. She was still adjusting, grappling with the sheer enormity of her new, unburdened future. Her joy was palpable, but beneath it, he sensed a subtle, almost imperceptible disorientation. She had spent so long living under a perceived deadline that living without one was a new, thrilling, yet overwhelming challenge. He saw her mentally reaching for new anchors, new long-term dreams to replace the frantic race.

He reached out, his hand gently covering hers where it rested on the table. "You can do anything, Remy," he said, his voice low and firm, pouring all his conviction into his words. "Anything you want. And I'll be there, every step of the way." His thumb stroked the back of her hand, a tender, possessive gesture. The warmth of her skin, the undeniable connection between them, pulsed in the quiet RV.

Remy looked at him, her blue eyes soft, vulnerable, reflecting the depth of his unspoken promise. A genuine smile, untinged by humor or sarcasm, bloomed on her face. "I know, Theo," she whispered, her voice thick with emotion. "I know."

The air between them crackled, charged with unspoken declarations and the quiet anticipation of what was to come. The small, velvet box remained hidden beneath the map, a secret waiting to be revealed, a promise waiting to be given. Theo felt a surge of impatience, a powerful urge to just get down on one knee right then and there. But he held back. The moment had to be perfect. As perfect as she was. He would give her the proposal, the grand gesture she deserved, a symbol of all the time she had in the world. He just needed to choose the right time, the right place. And he knew, with a certainty that resonated through every fiber of his being, that it would be soon.
