Back in Magic Theory class, Kaen continued his antics, now sitting so close their shoulders nearly touched. Zian inched away, but he simply followed, like a shadow clinging to light.
When the professor called on Zian to demonstrate a light spell, her golden orb shone brilliantly. Then it was Kaen's turn.
With a snap of his fingers, darkness swallowed the room whole—a void so complete several students gasped. When light returned, the professor looked shaken. "Unorthodox... but effective."
As they left class, Kaen fell into step beside Zian. "Admit it," he purred. "We make a good team."
Zian stopped abruptly, golden eyes flashing. "We're not teammates. We're not allies. Stay away from me."
Kaen watched her storm off, his smile never fading. Outside the window, the setting sun painted the academy walls blood-red.
