Noah's eyes narrowed as he looked between Chloe and me, his expression twisting into something ugly. The charming mask he'd worn moments before completely dissolved.
"You're joking," he said flatly. "Chloe Reed, one of the most sought-after women in New York City, dating a country doctor?"
"I don't see how that's any of your business," I replied calmly.
Noah stood abruptly, his chair scraping against the marble floor. "This is ridiculous. Chloe, what could you possibly see in someone like him?"
"Someone like what, exactly?" Chloe's voice carried a dangerous edge.
"Come on. Look at him." Noah gestured dismissively in my direction. "He's nobody. What family backing does he have? What connections? What can he possibly offer you that I can't provide ten times over?"
I felt Chloe's grip on my hand tighten. Her entire body had gone rigid with anger.
"Money isn't everything, Noah," she said coldly.
