"You're insane if you think I'm going to marry him!"
Olivia Thorne's voice carries down the hallway as I head toward the exit. I pause at the door, not out of curiosity, but because Victor appears behind me.
"Mr. Knight, please wait."
I turn. The old man's face is flushed with embarrassment.
"My apologies. Family discussions can get heated."
"It's none of my business, Mr. Thorne."
But Olivia's voice rises again from the living room. "Dad's lost his mind! That guy looks like he just graduated college. Mason Doyle is a real man. A prodigy. He's already made partner at his law firm at twenty-eight!"
Victor's jaw tightens. "Excuse me for just a moment."
He strides back into the living room. I should leave, but something in his tone makes me pause.
"Olivia," Victor says, his voice carrying a weight I haven't heard before. "Sit down."
"I'm not going to—"
"Sit. Down."
