"What's your plan? Where are you going?"
Sitting in the large truck, George asked the nurse Gabriela and the plump female driver, Isa.
In the movie, Gabriela took the mutant children to the North Dakota border, but it wasn't just because she read a comic and thought it was the last sanctuary for mutants.
She wasn't a child; how could she believe something from a comic book?
Furthermore, Rictor, the oldest of the mutant children, was also communicating with an unknown force via radio.
Due to George's mutant identity and his recent help, Gabriela had already established a basic trust in him. She didn't hold anything back now.
"We need to reach the North Dakota border by five o'clock next Friday, then cross into Canada."
"Why Canada? Why at that specific time?"
George's face showed a hint of confusion.
Gabriela explained:
"We've checked relevant information. Before mutants disappeared, Canada was the most mutant-friendly country, so before we decided to help the children escape, we proactively contacted the Canadian government.
They are willing to accept these children but don't want to cause trouble.
So, we must reach the border by five o'clock next Friday. At that time, they will try to interfere with the satellites in that area and then meet us on the other side of the border."
"So it's the Canadian government."
George suddenly understood. He had seen the X-Men series, so he had a general idea of the situation, but he wasn't familiar with specific details.
He genuinely didn't know about things like the Canadian government being friendly or at least not hostile towards mutants.
However, he then frowned, as he personally didn't trust the Canadian government much.
A government isn't an individual; it has many factors to consider, and a change in leadership could mean a change in stance. Even if the Canadian government was indeed not hostile towards mutants in the past, what about now?
Could it be that after these mutant children went there, they would become new test subjects?
He certainly wouldn't choose something so insecure.
So, he shared his concerns with Gabriela.
Gabriela was clearly surprised that George, a mutant who had never left the experimental base, could have such long-term considerations.
However, her reply was helpless:
"There's no other way. Even knowing there might be danger, we have no choice because we really can't think of a better solution."
Working in such a cruel experimental base, how could they not understand the ugliness of human nature, how could they not worry that the children might enter another hell once they arrived there?
But they had no choice, because they were a group of powerless people at the bottom of society, only their inner kindness had not yet been extinguished.
The children would surely die if they stayed in this experimental base, but going to Canada, there might still be some hope.
"Indeed, life can be so helpless sometimes."
George sighed upon hearing this.
In his previous life, he, too, had been at the bottom of society. He had experienced many such helpless choices, though none as cruel.
However, after thinking carefully, he still didn't have any good ideas. He was also unfamiliar with this world.
But he wouldn't entrust his fate to the Canadian government. Once he brought these children to the border, he would leave and hide himself.
Saving these children was already an act of benevolence. Protecting them by following them to Canada and being restrained by the Canadian government was out of the question.
Escorting them to the border was his limit.
At this moment, he had apparently forgotten the somewhat selfish reason he had used to convince himself at the crossroads earlier.
"We've reached Juárez. We'll buy some necessary supplies and head straight for the border, then enter New Mexico and go directly north to North Dakota.
If all goes well, it should only take about two days!"
After two hours of high-speed driving, the truck entered Juárez, a city in northeastern Mexico, and George stuck his head out to look.
He had heard of this city in his previous life, but it wasn't for a good reputation.
Juárez, a border city in northeastern Mexico, on the south bank of the Rio Grande, facing El Paso, USA, is known as one of the most violent cities in the world. At its peak, nearly fifteen thousand people were killed in criminal incidents over six years.
This city gathered the most drug traffickers in Mexico and was the primary source of drugs for the United States.
"Breaking news: The CEO of Stark Industries, the famous playboy Tony Stark, was kidnapped today in Kunar Province, Afghanistan, and his whereabouts are currently unknown..."
The truck stopped in front of a large supermarket. As Gabriela and Isa went to buy supplies, George, who stayed behind, was suddenly drawn to the news being broadcast on the TV in front of the supermarket.
"The event where Iron Man was born!"
His body jolted, and something suddenly clicked in his mind. A faint smile slowly spread across his face.
"Perhaps there's a new turn of events."
Recalling all the Marvel movies he had watched in his previous life and considering them carefully, he had a new idea.
For him, rather than trusting the integrity of a government, it was better to trust Tony Stark's integrity. Although the man was a bit of a playboy and arrogant, his character was solid.
Moreover, as one of America's biggest capitalists, even the government couldn't touch him; he wouldn't hand over the Iron Man suit if he didn't want to.
Just like Professor X in the past, the reason he could open a mutant school in New York, besides the X-Men's strength, was more importantly that Professor X himself was a wealthy individual, and his family was also a prominent capitalist one.
If they could gain Tony Stark's protection, these mutant children could not only avoid a lot of trouble but might also enjoy normal education and life.
And he could have a peaceful place to study magic.
As for getting involved with Tony Stark, and whether it would drag him into later events, facing greater dangers...
This kind of thing was unavoidable. He could only say that he should solve the current problems first, gain a relatively safe period to improve his strength as much as possible, because strength was paramount.
Besides, he had his own thoughts on whether or not to participate in those future major events.
If this were the movie universe, he would definitely hide far away. Even if Thanos snapped his fingers, everyone would eventually be saved anyway, so there was no need to participate. Wouldn't it be better to just study magic?
But this wasn't the movie universe; it was an unknown Marvel universe mixed with mutants, so it was hard to say.
Because it was very possible that in some major event, the entire Earth would be gone, and since he lived on this planet, he naturally couldn't escape.
Rather than entrusting his fate to those superheroes, he would entrust it to himself.
Perhaps if he intervened at a critical moment, he could get through those major events and ensure the safety of Earth and himself.
So, contact—that was bound to happen sooner or later.
"Right now, the most important thing is how to rescue Tony Stark and make him owe me a favor."
George stroked his chin, lost in thought.
To make Tony Stark, a top billionaire, owe him a favor and genuinely help them, it would have to be a life-saving act.
But with just him and his current strength, how could he rescue Tony Stark? He didn't even know the exact location of the man, only that he was supposedly in a cave in some desert.
