Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: A Taste of What Comes

For a long while, Lyon sat idly as he watched the news on an old, beat-up television set which looked like it came from the seventies. Upon the black and white screen, he eyed several superheroes taking down yet another band of villains. The Guardians of the Globe, heroes native to this world, essentially almost carbon copies of the Justice League. Yet, as he watched them, he smiled. Lyon knew they truly did want to do good, to save lives and such. A commendable pursuit, one he commonly thought of doing himself when he was just a kid.

Lyon, however, gave a sad sigh as he shook his head. He leaned back into the ragged couch he sat himself upon, glancing at the green watch upon his wrist. He remembered its shape, design, and color scheme. It was none other than the Omnitrix itself, a device capable of transforming the user into a near infinite amount of aliens, all with their own abilities and powers. A device he once thought as fictional. That is, until he woke up with it on his wrist, and in a totally different color.

Originally, it was red. Albedo's Omnitrix, to be exact. Yet it was by some miracle than Azmuth managed to track the Omnitrix's signal through means Lyon couldn't comprehend. The Galvan scientist, however, was unable to return Lyon to his home universe, at least not at the current moment in time. But as some modicum of an apology, Azmuth repaired Albedo's red Omnitrix, getting rid of the horrendous red color in the process. Essentially, Lyon wielded a true carbon copy of the Omnitrix, minus most of Albedo's features and bugs innate of his design.

Granted, it's ultimate-transforming gimmick was removed when Albedo decided to be an arrogant idiot and jump through different universes via some sort of network Azmuth established, but it was still an Omnitrix. However, Azmuth did idly mention one seemingly strange defect in the Omnitrix, something the genius Galvan couldn't quite pinpoint exactly. So to maintain a communication link with Lyon, Azmuth dispatched a drone of sorts, which acted as that link, whilst also functioning as a repair-bench for the Omnitrix, should it be damaged. Unfortunately, that was all the ancient Galvan said before the feed suddenly cut off, probably due to some sort of disturbance

"Things are just so fuckin' weird now." Lyon muttered under his breath, sighing as he rubbed his temples in frustration. "Had to end up here of all places. But I guess it could've been worse. And at least I've got some glimmer of hope of going home. Even if I'll probably get my memory wiped in the process." He said to himself, blowing a breath and staring at the ceiling of the abandoned warehouse he squatted at. "Oh, well. At least I'll be able to meet a bunch of cool people in the future. Hopefully. Don't wanna jinx anything." Lyon added with a mirthful chuckle.

Lyon did not have a whole lot going for him. All he had was the Omnitrix, its aliens, the clothes on his back, the drone Azmuth had dispatched, and what little knowledge of the place he had. It wasn't a whole lot, but at least it was something. Granted, he couldn't Alien X his way out of this situation, given that he didn't have the damned transformation. So instead, he had to plan smart, and plan for the future. Fortunately, he had just the right alien for the job.

Looking down at the Omnitrix's face, Lyon sighed. "Good a time as any to give you a shot, I guess. Barely had time to mess around with the aliens I've got in here." Lyon grumbled as he tapped the Omnitrix's face, revealing a holographic, circular, green wheel of sorts. He scrolled through the list, and found the one he sought. "Alright, little guy, time to see if you'll be as cool as I hoped you'd be." He announced, slamming his hand onto the Omnitrix's protruding button.

And in a green flash, his body began to change. His skin became a greenish-grey color, his body shrunk down, and his head began to shift. The transformation was instant, and with his new body, Lyon carefully crawled down the couch he previously sat on, announcing his new name out proudly. Partially out of boredom, partially out of trying to keep some semblance of sanity, and a not-so partial way to keep the tradition alive.

"Grey Matter!" Lyon announced, hearing his new voice. He blinked a few times, and turned to face a nearby broken mirror. He frowned deeply, and palmed his frog-like face. "Oh, I just had to end up looking like a carbon copy of Albedo, didn't I?" He muttered in frustration, noting the physical similarities. "Well, at least I'm not red. Green's more my color anyway." Lyon commented.

He wasn't transformed into the usual Grey Matter like Ben. Instead, however, he appeared as Albedo, something he assumed that must have been because he was using Albedo's Omnitrix or some sort of failsafe. Which might have explained the diagnostic reading Azmuth read while repairing the Albedo's false Omnitrix. However, even if Lyon was transformed as Albedo, he was still a Galvan, one of the smartest being in the entire galaxy. Meaning he was still way smarter than Lyon was as himself.

"Okay, a scrambling device is something I'm going to need. Don't want anyone with a higher tech-base to find my location immediatley. There was a junkyard not far from this location. An ideal place to set up and gather resources. Even if I'm going to be working with literal junk." Lyon declared with his new voice, allowing Grey Matter's full brilliance to take hold. "Jury Rigg is far better suited to the task, but I have faith in Galvan genius." He said, hopping onto a shopping cart.

Lyon knew he couldn't sit idly by for long, especially with the entire world at stake. With Omni-Man still looming over the world as a hero, and the Guardians of the Globe active, he didn't exactly know how much time he had until things took a turn for the worse. It could've been days, weeks; hell, even years. But all that mattered to him was following the driving force in his gut. The urge to follow in his fellow Omnitrix bearer's footsteps and be a hero - to save lives.

However, at that thought, Lyon blinked, exiting the warehouse using his shopping cart. Releasing a thoughtful hum, Lyon stroked his alien chin, sifting through his memory.

"Wasn't Spawn and Jacky Estacado in this universe as well? A terrifying thought. But not as much as Angstrom Levy." Lyon thought aloud as he sighed, shaking his head. "Doesn't matter at the current moment. All that matters is trying to survive. And perhaps joining the Guardians would be my best shot at that..." He hummed before giving a slight smirk. "Yeah. I guess that could work. I don't mind working with knockoffs." Lyon chuckled as he glanced down at himself.

In more than one way, he supposed it could mean more than just one thing.

Under the cover of darkness, Lyon prowled the streets. For a long while, in his invisible, incorporeal form, he drifted from one dark alley to another. He phased through walls, something that should have unnerved his human brain. But yet, as the most ghostly of aliens, he felt... used to the sensation. From one building to another, he phased through them as if they weren't even there. No one paid much attention to him, with many of the clerks and cashiers from nearby convenience stores continuing on with their nights. It wasn't the most spectacular of hero outings, but it was technically his first one.

"Man, Ghostfreak is awesome. Forgot how cool this guy was. Zs'Skayr aside." Lyon said in his new, ghastly voice, chuckling to himself as prowled the streets, his ghostly tail slithering behind him. "Just hope this transformation's all fixed now. That'd be a bad can of worms to open up, especially here.. But so long as I'm in the dark, no one can see me. At least, until the timer runs out." He said to himself, using the eye-track on his ghostly skin to scan the environment.

Never in his wildest dreams would Lyon have thought he could get to actually use the Omnitrix. Especially now that he was in a potentially hostile world full of aliens, monsters, and mysticism in equal measure. Yet, even with this fact looming over his head like a guillotine, he couldn't help but relish in this ability to walk in the shoes of different alien species, with millions more potentially all waiting for him to unlock. And while he hadn't received his favorite alien right off the bat, he was sure it'll be unlocked later down the line.

With the coast clear, Lyon hovered close to the ground, hiding within one of the many alleys. He slapped the Omnitrix on his chest, and in a flash of green, he reverted back to his normal human appearance. He felt the cold breeze against his skin, and Lyon let out a shiver, wishing he had a jacket of some kind. However, he shook his head, and raised the Omnitrix up to his face. He squinted at it for a few moments, before tapping it and earning himself an electronic series of trills from the device.

"Alright, let's see what else this thing can do. Think Azmuth mentioned a GPS somewhere here. As garbled as that message was." Lyon muttered, tapping the Omnitrix a few more times before finally getting the image he wanted. It was a holographic screen, showing a crystal-clear replica of his surroundings, all in a green tint. On the other side of the 'map', was a brighter green egg-shaped signal, indicating the drone Azmuth had brought over, still in the warehouse. "Okay, this is handy as hell. Didn't take too long for this thing to update its navigation at all. Sweet." He remarked with a wide, toothy grin.

There were so many gimmicks and features to the Omnitrix that made life easier, some more so than others. Navigation, crystal-clear communications, a database, DNA scanning, and even some defensive capabilities. Lyon didn't know where to start with all of them. But despite this daunting task of memorizing everything the Omnitrix could do, Lyon couldn't help but keep the grin on his face, excitement and elation at an all-time high. Yet, he composed himself, remembering just where exactly he was.

"Okay, think I got some better understanding of this thing. Better than that one time I tried to build a PC with junk parts. Thing looked like Jury Rigg built it, too." Lyon said to himself, smiling at the memory as he switched off the display. "Right, then. Guess I can continue on with my night a little while longer. See who's gonna try and do some shit so I can stop 'em. Usual stuff." He announced, tapping the sides of the Omnitrix and readying a transformation.

With an inquisitive hum, Lyon smiled, and slammed his hand onto the Omnitrix's face. And in an instant, green light consumed him, his human form changing. His skin began to become a red hue, yellow horns sprouted from his face, and a layer of skin formed from his arms to his body. Soaring into the air, Lyon barked out his transformation's name.

"Jetray! I love flying! Yeah!" Lyon announced excitedly with his new alien voice. "Since Martian Man is part of the Guardians, guess being in alien form wouldn't be too bad if I get found out. He seems like a helluva guy. Cecil seems to have no problems with him." He said, smiling wide as he zoomed through the skies like a red blur. "Jetray can fly both underwater and in space, I think. So I should be pretty good. But I can't stray too far from that drone. That thing's too damned important for me to lose it." Lyon said to himself, concealing himself by using the clouds high in the sky and gazing town at the city below.

Combined with his flight and neuroshock lasers Jetray possessed, Lyon felt pretty confident in his abilities. They probably wouldn't do him any good when Battle Beast or Omni-Man came to fight him, but at least he was able to defend himself and dish out some damage. But, perhaps if he played his cards right, pretended to be weaker than what he actually was, maybe he'd get the chance to scan their DNA, if possible. There were many different aliens in this new universe that Lyon wondered just what sort of limits were there.

But if Omni-Man or some other Viltrumite did ever have any reason to attack him, Lyon was capable of exploiting their one big weakness. The chances were slim, and he certainly didn't want to antagonize a Viltrumite this early, but he had a few means to defend himself, if that were to ever occur. Nothing several high-frequency sonic blasts couldn't help solve. Especially with Echo-Echo in his roster, Lyon knew he'd definitely put a damper in Omni-Man's efforts, if he needed to use him.

Lyon shook his head, eyes focused completely forward as he flew back towards his hideout. It was a fair distance away from the city, but at least it was some semblance of a home. And with Grey Matter's computer program doing wonders hacking into several government databases and various feeds. And soon enough, Lyon planned to be right in the middle of the action that's to come. If only to get better chances at being inducted into the new Guardians of the Globe himself when they eventually bit the dust.

Yet, a frown formed on his ray-like face at that thought.

"God, that's such a morbid thing to think about."
