Chapter 5 - Looking up so I don't look at you

POV: Blaze

The game shifted again.

The gentle, nature-filled garden dissolved around us, and in its place appeared a long glowing bridge, floating in the sky.

Above us? Stars.

Below us? More stars.

It looked like we were suspended between galaxies.

The screen pulsed softly.

> "Stargazers' Bridge – Relationship Sync 38%"

Seriously? It was tracking that?

---

Blaze

(muttering)

"Cool. Space. Romance. Totally what I signed up for.

POV: Codie

I walked forward in silence. The bridge lit up with every step I took. Blue, pink, and soft gold underfoot like fairy dust.

I hated how pretty it was.

Because suddenly… this wasn't just a game.

Codie

"Wow…"

Blaze

"Pretty sure the game's trying to set us up."

I shot him a look.

Codie

"Please. If it wanted to do that, it should've made your character hotter."

Blaze

"Ouch."

POV: Blaze

She smirked.

Why did I like that?

Why did I even care?

System Notification:

> "Task: Watch the stars together. Duration: 60 seconds. If a player refuses, penalty will apply."

Blaze

(reading aloud)

"Oh come on…"

Codie

(sighs)

"Fine. I'll sit."

She plopped down right there on the glowing glass bridge.

Blaze

I stood for a second, debating whether to follow… then gave in and sat beside her.

A safe distance.

Not too close.

Just enough to pretend I wasn't nervous.

Codie

"Don't get any ideas. This is just for the task."

Blaze

"Oh totally. Not like I'm thrilled about spending a minute in silence with you under artificial stars or anything."

POV: Codie

I didn't reply.

I just tilted my head back and stared up.

The stars weren't real.

But they sparkled like they were.

Some of them moved… like comets. Some blinked.

I'd helped design this sky. I'd written the vision doc for it.

But sitting here with him?

It didn't feel like my game anymore.

Codie

"You're staring."

Blaze

"No, I'm not."

Codie

"You are.

Blaze

I was.

And I didn't even feel like lying about it anymore.

Codie

I looked at him, finally.

And for a second… he wasn't just Blaze_King.

He wasn't just the annoying dev my team had picked up last-minute.

He was just… a boy. Quiet. Smart. Funny. Kind of infuriating.

But not fake.

Not at all.

System Notification:

> "Stargazers' Bridge Task Complete. Relationship Sync: 52%."

Blaze

(softly)

"Fifty-two percent."

Codie

"It's just numbers."

But my heart knew it wasn't.

Not anymore.

POV: Blaze

She stood up quickly, brushing invisible dust from her knees again. Her eyes avoided mine.

We kept walking.

No more words.

No more jokes.

But I swear…

Her hand brushed mine for a second.

And I didn't pull away.
