I shifted uncomfortably under Camille's expectant gaze. Her perfect smile beamed at me as if we were old friends rather than two women connected by the most awkward circumstances imaginable.
"What did you want to ask me?" I finally said when the silence stretched too long.
Camille tucked a strand of golden hair behind her ear. "I was wondering if you'd like to join me for coffee sometime? It's just that I don't have many friends in town, and you seem so... nice."
The hesitation in her voice made something twist in my chest. Despite everything, despite who she was engaged to, I couldn't help but notice how lonely she sounded.
Beside me, Chloe cleared her throat loudly. "Actually, Seraphina and I are in the middle of a girl's day. Very busy schedule."
The brightness in Camille's eyes dimmed slightly. "Oh, of course. I didn't mean to interrupt."
"You're not interrupting," I said automatically, then caught Chloe's warning glance.
