Chapter 1 - Wellstons High School

My name is David Karnazes.

I was homeschooled most of my life because of my ability. At first, it was weak—barely worth mentioning. Still, my parents were proud of me the moment I awakened. My father has a superhuman-type ability, and my mother has regeneration. So naturally, they hoped I would inherit something strong. When I was born, I did awaken… but my level was still low.

Everything changed when I started getting bullied. Out of frustration—and a bit of desperation—I began training back at home, even though I wasn't sure it would do anything. I doubted it would work... but I was wrong.

That's when I discovered the truth: the more training, the stronger I became. Physical punishment, brutal workouts, any method I could think of—everything helped me grow.

I eventually dropped out of regular school and dedicated myself fully to training. My parents, recognizing my resolve, supported me. And because of their high status, they even allowed me to use enhancement drugs and other extreme measures to push my body beyond its limits.

Now, after years of brutal training—pushing my body past its limits, even to the point of breaking—I've finally transferred into Wellston High as a second-year student. I've grown… a lot. So much, in fact, that I no longer resemble the weak kid I once was.

Steroids and drugs aren't allowed at Wellston, which sucks—but that doesn't matter. I don't need them anymore. I'll keep growing with or without them.

I've come too far to stop now. Time has passed at Wellston High. And things are about to get interesting.

Time Passed

.....

At Wellston High, the school's famous Triple Chocolate Cake is only served once a month. Because it's such a rare treat, everyone rushes to the cafeteria the moment lunch starts—hoping to grab a slice before it's gone.

This time, only one piece remained.

Remi, a pink-haired girl and one of the Royals, spotted it and dashed forward.

Remi: "Step away from that slice! I call dibs!"

Just as she reached out, a blond-haired boy snatched the plate right out from under her.

Remi: "Hey! Give that back, Arlo! I called it first!"

Arlo smirked, clearly enjoying himself.

Arlo: "'Called it'? Come on, Remi, you should know how this works. First come, first served. If you wanted it, you should've been faster."

While the two Royals bickered, a tall, muscular student quietly walked up behind them. Without either of them noticing, he snatched the cake right off Arlo's tray.

By the time Arlo realized his plate was empty, Remi was shocked.

Remi: "Uh, you might wanna look behind you."

Arlo turned around—and there he was.

David Karnazes. The infamous second-year transfer. A beast of a student, known more for his relentless training than for talking to anyone.

Arlo: "Hey, David—"

Before Arlo could finish, David devoured the cake in seconds, casually flipped him off, and walked away without a word—heading straight back to training. As he left, he noticed John staring at him from across the room—probably eyeing the cake too.

David didn't say anything—he just smirked. It wasn't that he hated John. In fact, he already knew who he was. The two had transferred to Wellston at the same time, they become friends quickly regardless of power.

It had nothing to do with the rumors about John being a cripple. David already knew the truth. He might not be the smartest guy around, but he paid enough attention to the news back home.

Why John chose to hide his ability was a mystery—but David didn't care. It wasn't his problem.

Still, he figured he'd ask about it eventually. Just not now. Not yet.

Arlo stared, jaw clenched, clearly pissed—but in the end, he just sighed. He knew he couldn't take David on… and neither could Remi. Remi look like she has a tear in his eye because she didn't get a cake.

Around the cafeteria, students whispered to each other.

Student 1: "Damn… I was hoping to see another Arlo vs. Remi fight. But too bad—the strongest guy in school showed up like that and just walked away."

Student 2: "Wait, isn't Seraphina the strongest? She's the Ace of the Royals."

Student 1: "Yeah, technically. But everyone knows she and David are equals. He was even offered the Ace position—but he turned it down. Said it was a waste of time."

At Wellston, the Royals were the student council's elite:

Ace: Seraphina

King: Arlo

Queen: Remi

Jack: Isen

Healer: Elaine

Some students believe David should've been the Ace. After all, he had already defeated every Royal—except Seraphina. Their fight was never resolved.

Seraphina was the only one who managed to land clean hits on David. She dealt real damage—but even then, David barely flinched. He remained standing, breathing steady, while Seraphina showed signs of fatigue.

The outcome was unclear, but one thing was certain in the minds of many:

David Karnazes might just be the true strongest in Wellston High.

After Lunch Break Ended...

Class resumed, and David found himself sitting in the same room as John, Arlo, and Remi. The teacher was speaking, but David couldn't focus on any of it. None of it made sense to him, and honestly, he had no interest in staying. He could've walked out easily—no one could stop him—but he didn't like abusing his strength for something so trivial.

Then the teacher asked a question.

John: "Can I go to the bathroom?"

The teacher looked mildly annoyed but allowed it. A moment later, David raised his hand.

David: "Me too."

The teacher, already suspicious, reluctantly nodded again. He knew exactly what was going on—but said nothing.

As they got up, a green-haired student named Marden looked like he wanted to say something, but froze the moment David locked eyes with him. Intimidated, he stayed silent.

David and John walked out of the classroom. Once in the hall, David spoke first.

David: "Say, John... you're skipping class again, aren't you?"

John: "Yeah. But Is true I was planning to use the bathroom, y'know."

David: "Same."

They continued walking in silence for a while, but David figured this was the right moment to ask.

David: "Hey, John."

John: "Yeah?"

David: "How long are you planning to keep hiding it?"

John: "Hide what?"

David: "Your power."

John:(laughing) "Hah this again, what do you mean? You know I'm a cripple, right?"

David: "…Fine. I won't ask. But don't expect me to step in and help you either."

John: "Yeah, yeah. I know…"

David never helped John when he was getting beaten up—except once, during a gang attack. David wasn't the kind to intervene without reason. He knew there were bullies in school and usually chose to ignore them. If the victim fought back, that was fair game. But when it was two against one? That crossed a line.

He had his own rules. So did John.

David rarely helped John unless it was completely unjustified. If John brought it on himself, David didn't step in.

Eventually, they reached the bathroom—only to hear a loud crash just before they entered. A wall near them shattered, and through it came Blyke—bloodied and dazed.

John: "Are you alright?!"

Blyke, clearly annoyed and not noticing the two of them, clutched his head and shouted:

Blyke: "Ouch! Damn you, Isen!"

From the hole in the wall, another figure stepped in—Isen, the Royals' Jack.

Isen: "You idiot! I lent you my pen for one class, and you go and break it?!"

They started arguing, tensions rising fast.

John: "You're not gonna stop them?"

David: "Nope. Too much trouble."

John: "Didn't you say you were going to the bathroom too?"

David: "I can go to the other bathroom."

Without a second glance, David left. John sighed, and just as Blyke started charging his ability, he hurried off to follow David to the other bathroom.

On the other side of the building, they found a gray-haired student—Gavin—bullying someone smaller. When Gavin noticed David, he froze in shock, unsure of what to do.

David, uninterested, walked right past him and into the bathroom.

As Gavin raised his fist again, John stepped in between them.

Inside the bathroom, David heard the confrontation but chose to ignore it. When he eventually came out, he found John with a broken arm.

David: "So… broken again, huh?"

John: "Yeah… but I did win, you know."

David: "Well, good for you."

John: "Still… I'm probably gonna get scolded."

David: "Well, that's your fault. But still… I'll walk you to the infirmary."

John: "No need. But… thanks."

As they walked down the hall, their conversation continued.

David: "Man, I could've handled that stoneboy without even using my ability."

John: "Yeah, I know. We fought once—you didn't even use your ability. I'm honestly thankful for that. But it's still frustrating. I couldn't beat you. Your martial arts alone are better than mine… and with your insane physical stats? It's no contest. Makes sense though—with your regeneration, you heal faster, so you can train harder."

David: "Exactly. I've put myself through extreme training, injuries, nonstop conditioning. I sometime didn't rely on my ability, but it definitely helped me recover and push further."

David (thought):No need to mention the drugs.

John: "Yeah. I've seen how you train. I could never do that… it's insane."

David: "There are others with regeneration too, but they waste their potential. They only train a little—never pushing themselves until their body breaks. I mean, they can regenerate, so why not go all out?"

John: "Well, they're not you. That's the difference. And your power… it's more than just regeneration, isn't it?"

David: "Yeah. But still, they could at least be half as strong if they trained like I did. So many students here are proud, but they don't push their abilities to the limit. Shameful."

John: "Can't argue with that."

David: "And that includes you. You know none of this would be happening if you just used your ability."

John: "What do you mean? I thought I already answered that. I—"

David: "New Boston. Did you really think I didn't know about it?"

John froze, stunned.

John: "How… how did you know?"

David: "I might not be the smartest guy around, but I watch the news. Sometime. Besides, I was homeschooled and come from a high-status family—so yeah, I know things. Not trying to brag, just stating facts."

John went quiet.

David: "Don't worry, I've never told anyone. But… can I ask why you're hiding it? I know what happened from the news, but not the full story."

John visibly struggled to answer.

David: "Forget it. Looks like it's a painful memory. I won't push. Just know—secrets like that don't stay hidden forever."

John: "…I know. But… thanks for not pushing further."

David: "And just so you know—that's why I didn't help you."

John: "I doubt that only applies to me."

David: "Yeah. You're right. I have my own rules."

John: "Your rules are weird."

David: "Maybe. But I wish more students fought back like you. Problem is… they're not you."

John: "They could be like me. But they'll never be you. You're way beyond us. I'm just… ordinary."

David: "You mean Unordinary."

John: "Oh? You read that too?"

David: "Yeah, it was impressive. But don't get the wrong idea—I'm not trying to be some vigilante hero like the guy in the book or those ones in the news."

John: "At least you liked it."

David: "Wait—why are we talking about books now? What I meant was—you're Unordinary."

John: "Same could be said about you."

David: "…Now that I think about it… how do you know about that book?"

John: "Well, I can tell you, but you have to promise never to tell anyone. Not that I think you'd bother."

John leaned in and whispered:

John: "My father wrote that book."

David: "Oh. Okay."

John: "…That's your reaction?"

David: "What, did you expect me to be shocked? Scream in disbelief?"

John (thought):Yeah… kinda.

David: "It's just a book. Big deal."

John: "You do know it's banned, right?"

David: "It that so?"

John: "Wait, you didn't know it was banned? then how you get it"

David: "My parents gave it to me as a gift when I was a kid—probably before it got banned. Back then, I said I wanted something unordinary—like something I'd never seen before. I didn't mean a book literally called Unordinary. But still though i kinda like it so i give it a pass."

John (thought):This guy is seriously weird…

When they arrived at the infirmary, John swallowed nervously and stepped inside. David followed behind.

A blue-haired doctor, Darren, looked up and sighed when he saw John's arm.

Darren: "Back again, John? Another broken arm?"
