Chapter 3 - A Mongrel Dog

Jayce

Being a Gamma is more than a duty; it's the purpose of my life. Without a Luna to protect, I feel lost. That's why, when Alpha gave me the opportunity to come to this city for a while, I accepted without hesitation.

Sitting in a picturesque coffee shop, savoring the best mild coffee in the world, watching humans rush by: some alone, others with company, children, adults following their destinies and heading into their day. I am the spectator who steals moments from others, unable to create my own. My father advised me to use an odor-inhibiting spray so that other wolves I might encounter wouldn't recognize me. So, for the few wolves in this city, I'm just another human.

My calm is interrupted when I smell two wolves, a boy and a girl, both very attractive, both blond. Even though I don't want to, my ear registers their conversation, and determined to leave, I head for the exit, but I stop when I hear their words:

—Is she pregnant? It was only once, how is that possible if she doesn't have your mark? You're not thinking of letting that abomination be born, are you? —The blonde whispers low.

—No, I would never have a child with a human, degrade my lineage, never.

—Why don't you reject her right away? You can't risk it; the longer it takes, the harder it will be for the wolf.

—As long as she carries the pup, he won't let me do it, he claims it as his own…

Shit! He's an Alpha, and an evil one at that. This bastard is going to get rid of his pup and his Luna. How can he…? How can he do that when others would give their lives for that chance?

—It's already decided —he says— I'll take her to the abortion clinic, and when it's done, I'll reject her. Tomorrow we return to the pack; no one will ever know my mate was a despicable human. For everyone, you will be my destined mate, and no one will be able to say anything about it; in the next wolf moon, I will mark you and announce you as my Luna, and our son will lead after me.

—Will she accept it? —Blondy asked.

—If she doesn't, I'll use my Alpha command; I already proved it works when I slept with her, and one way or another, that weak abomination won't be born. You know I can't even smell him yet, that's a sign of his weakness.

—Good thing we decided to use Wolfsbane; the wolf won't impose on you for the rejection. I doubled the dose this morning to weaken him today so he doesn't interfere while you take her to the clinic. —Blondy whispers again, and my fingers are now white from lack of blood.

He's a mongrel dog. He forced her to be with him when he had no intention of marking her and didn't even tell her the truth. Oh, Goddess, these two plan to deceive not only their pack but the entire Alpha council. I've found my purpose; this Luna needs me, and I will protect her even from this weak and pathetic imitation of an Alpha.

Their conversation made me nauseous. I heard part of their story: how they've loved each other since they were pups, how they were sure they were destined mates, how they traveled to prepare their mating ceremony (before knowing if they were mates), and how the Moon Goddess had an interesting surprise in store for them (interesting wasn't the word they used). They went through several stores picking up packages before parting ways at a hotel entrance. She went inside, while I followed him. Let's see where he leads.
