Chapter 4 - Chapter 4: Blood in the Water

The headlines hit like a tsunami.

Monroe Holdings Poised to Take Majority Control?

Grayson stared at the screen in silence. His office was unusually still, the usual buzz replaced by tension that coiled like a viper. Ava had stormed in earlier, cursing at the media frenzy and threatening to withdraw the Harrington investment. His lawyers were already working on damage control.

But none of that mattered.

He knew who had done it.

"Elena," he muttered, jaw tightening.

He didn't need proof. The timing was too perfect, the precision too surgical. Only she knew how to hit him where it hurt the most—his empire.

And she was doing it piece by piece.

Monroe Holdings – Elena's Office

The air was electric.

Elena stood at the head of the conference table as her team scrolled through press updates and news coverage. The board was thrilled. Stocks were rising. Public interest had skyrocketed.

She had the upper hand.

And it was only the beginning.

Nico leaned in, whispering, "You just kicked a hornet's nest, El."

"Good," she said without hesitation. "Let him sting."

"But what if he fights back? We both know Grayson doesn't lose quietly."

She turned to him, eyes sharp as glass. "Then he'll learn what it means to lose loud."

Flashback - Five Years Ago

Elena stood outside Grayson's penthouse, her hands trembling as she clutched the tiny white stick in her purse. Positive. Two pink lines.

She wasn't ready. She didn't even know if he'd be happy.

But she wanted to believe in them. In the man who whispered forever into her skin.

She entered his apartment and stopped short.

Grayson stood in the living room with Ava Harrington. Close. Too close. Ava's hand on his arm, her smile sickeningly sweet.

"Elena," he said, surprised.

"I—" Her mouth opened. Closed. She glanced at Ava, then at him. "I need to talk to you. Alone."

Grayson hesitated. "Ava and I were just discussing—"

"Discussing what?" Elena demanded. "The merger? The engagement?"

Silence.

That was the night she'd turned and walked away.

That was the night she knew she had no place in his world.

Present Day – Wolfe Enterprises

Grayson stormed into the boardroom where the remaining members of his leadership sat waiting.

"Find me that leak," he barked. "Now."

"We've narrowed it down to someone in Finance," one said. "But the press already has the story. Damage is done."

"We're hemorrhaging reputation," another added. "Investors are pulling out. Shares are down 12%."

He slammed his fist on the table. "I want a counterattack. Today."

A pause.

Then one of the younger executives spoke up. "There's something… personal you should know."

Grayson's eyes narrowed. "Speak."

"Someone found photos of Ms. Monroe with a child. A girl. Five, maybe six years old."

Time froze.

Grayson's heart slammed against his ribs.

"She looks like you," the man said quietly. "Should we release it?"

He stood slowly, voice low. "No. Not a word. Not until I say so."

Monroe Holdings – Elena's Apartment That Night

Sophie was curled up in bed, her favorite plush toy tucked under her arm. Elena sat beside her, brushing soft curls from her forehead.

"Mommy?" Sophie whispered sleepily. "Do I have a daddy?"

Elena froze.

For a long moment, she couldn't speak. Then she smiled, brushing a kiss to her daughter's cheek.

"You have me, baby. That's all you'll ever need."

But her throat burned as she turned out the light.

Back in the living room, she poured herself a drink. Her phone buzzed.

Unknown Number:You've made your move. My turn.

She stared at the message, heart pounding.

A second message followed.

Meet me tomorrow. Midnight. The rooftop where it all started.

Grayson.

Midnight – The Rooftop

The wind was cold and sharp atop the high-rise, slicing through Elena's coat. The rooftop was empty except for the familiar figure standing at the edge, staring out at the glittering city.

Grayson turned when she approached. His eyes held fire. Fury. And something else.

"Enjoying your victory?" he asked.

"Depends. Are you ready to surrender?"

He stepped closer. "You've always been ruthless when pushed."

"You pushed me off a cliff. I just learned how to fly on the way down."

A beat of silence passed between them.

Then he reached into his pocket and pulled out a photograph.

Elena's heart stopped.

Sophie. Her daughter's school photo.

"Where did you get this?" she demanded, snatching it.

"I had to be sure," he said. "She's mine."

Her throat tightened. "Don't say it like that. Like you deserve her."

"I do deserve her. I deserved to know."

"Knowing would've made you a threat," she snapped. "You would've used her against me."

His eyes flared. "You don't know that."

"I know you," she spat. "You chose power over love. Deals over devotion. You left me with nothing."

He stepped closer. "I made a mistake, Elena. I let fear win. But I never stopped loving you."

She shook her head, swallowing tears. "Love isn't enough. Not after what you did."

Then he did something unexpected.

He dropped to his knees.

"Elena…" His voice cracked. "I want to make it right. Let me see her. Please."

Her lips parted. Her heart thundered.

She hated him. She wanted to hate him.

But the sight of the cold-hearted billionaire CEO on his knees broke something in her.

"I'll think about it," she whispered.

He stood slowly, eyes never leaving hers.

"You're not the only one with claws," he said.

She arched a brow. "Is that a threat?"

"No." He leaned in, voice low. "It's a promise. You want war, Elena? I'll give you war. But don't forget—I taught you how to fight."

He brushed a kiss to her cheek—soft, tender, cruel—and walked away.

Elena stood frozen, the photo of their daughter pressed to her chest.
