Chapter 11 - Chapter 10: The Pelt

My eyes open from my deep sleep. I instantly feel cold from my clothes being soaked in water from the night before. A slight shiver goes through my body telling me I need to warm up. As I groggily get up ready to start my day, I realize that I forgot to get any berries last night. Also rock is not comfortable to sleep on. I really need to make a bed.

I move my stiff body towards the tunnel entrance crawling through to get out of the cave. I get to the end where I can now see the sky. Before I leave the cave I slowly lift my head out of the hole. I'm still super cautious from last night. I really wasn't expecting to fight a wolf anytime soon.

I look around just outside the cave to see if there is any danger. Luckily there isn't. I climb out of the cave. I look at my clothes and my spear, seeing that my clothes are now dyed pink. My spear is now covered in blood. The tip being dark red stained from the wolf blood.

After doing a quick check of my tools and myself. I grab my spear, I won't ever leave without it from now on, I head to grab some berries. A quick search leads me to a few cyan berries, I eat them and then start heading to the creek to get water. It's early morning just after day break.

As I head to the creek I see the dead wolf from last night. Still there, intact and bloody. I'm surprised that it's still intact and not eaten. I wonder if this was the only predator around? It can't be, wolves usually hunt in packs. I hope they are further away from here and don't bother me. I'll have to come back and take off the skin. I need new clothes.

I make it to the creek and drink water like normal. I take off my clothes and check how my wounds are. They have scabbed over and don't look infected yet. I have a feeling that they will get infected. I sat down to relax for a few minutes. I do remember hearing dings before I fell asleep last night. I should check what they are. Show status.

What does the spear skill do? Show the combat skill spear.

[Spear - When using a spear in combat, can use the spear more finely]

So it's just a skill that will help me in a fight. I wonder if this would help with hunting? I will have to find out later when I hunt some creatures.

I have been identifying a bunch of new items lately. I should take a look at what they all are and what information it will tell me. Also it can identify creatures that will be helpful when hunting. Show previous identified items.

[Sappy Dogbane - Dogbane that produces more sap than normal]

[Sappy Dogbane Cordage - Cordage made from sappy dogbane]

[Pink Aspen Tree - An aspen tree that is pink]

[Pink Aspen Powder - A powder from an aspen tree that helps with coagulating blood]

Hmm, it seems like the [Identify] skill is really basic in telling me what information there is on the item. I probably have to level the skill up to get more information given to me. I think that is the case! I remember the tree with multi-colored leaves only having question marks for the name. Okay enough dilly dallying Pola got to get a move on.

I head to my pile of tools by the creek and grab a few knife flakes. I then headed to the wolf I killed last night. Memories from last night pop into my head. I'm lucky to be alive. It was me or the wolf and the wolf lost today. I get next to the wolf that is on its belly. I put down my spear and knife flakes.

"You must have had a hard time living, but I will use your skin for clothes and live on. So thank you for what you have offered me" My voice is a little scratchy as I haven't talked in many hours. I push the wolf over to its back, struggling a bit to manage. I grab a knife flake and start carefully cutting to get the skin off.

I skinned some smaller animals back on earth. Nothing the size of a wolf. But I have to make do with what I got. I start at the front legs, slicing around the mid ankle of the wolf. Separating the flesh from the membrane. I do the same for the back legs. I then cut down towards the chest of the wolf. Slicing down from the legs. I do the same for the back legs, but instead of the chest it's the crotch.

After making those cuts I slowly peel the skin off the body, starting from the legs. I keep pressure as it is easier to cut the membrane holding the skin to the body. I gently put a knife to the membrane where the skin gets stuck and can't be pulled back further. I do the same for all 4 legs. I then cut from the chest to the crotch, not going deep because I don't want the dead wolf to smell. It has to have been rotting on the inside.

I then start to peel the left side of the mid section of the wolf away from its body, gently cutting the membrane. I want to keep the hide in one piece as it is easier to manage. I get the left side down to the ground and now start working on the right. I take my time and get the right midsection of the wolf to the ground too. Now I have to work on the butt of the wolf. I'm going to break off the tail as I don't need it.

I get the butt done and am at the tail now. I cut into the tendons holding the tail to the bones. I then hit the tail breaking the tendons connected to the bones. I cut off the tail as it will get in my way.

Next comes the underside of the head. I cut up from the chest going past the neck to the bottom of the jaw. I peel the skin off of the neck and lower jaw. I roll the wolf over so the wolf is chest down again. I peel the skin from the back to front being easier. I get the whole back of the wolf done and am left with the top of the head. I slowly peel the skin forward, and cut where the tendons of the ears are. I want to keep the ears perky when I tan the hide. I get the rest of the head done and now am left with a pelt of fur.

My hands and body were covered in blood again. I have the pelt in one hand and my spear in the other as I head to the creek again. I need to wash my body and the pelt. Once I clean my body up and the pelt a little cleaner, I throw it on a large rock by the creek, fur down. I then go back to grab a knife flake. I scrape off any bits of meat or fat on the pelt. Trying to get it as clean as possible so I can turn it into rawhide.

I need to make a wood drying rack for the pelt. I rush to cut some trees so I can make the drying rack. I also rush back to the top of the hill for the leftover cordage. I might have to make more. I make it back with the cordage and start cutting down some oak trees. I get 4 good size ones so that there is enough room for the hide to dry.

I cut out notches for the wood logs to stick together. I tie the 4 corners so that it doesn't fall apart. Then I lean it against a tree. I go over to grab the pet, it's still damp thankfully. I grab a pointy flake so I can make holes in the pelt to hang it up. I make holes on the edges about an inch in so that it can be spread apart. I take the cordage that I have and tie the pelt up on the drying rack. I start with the head so that it is centered on the drying rack. Then one leg after the other. The body one side then the next. Then any other parts that aren't tight I do those too.

Once done and the pelt is tied up I drag the drying rack into a sunny spot. Letting the pelt dry so it turns into raw hide. I can't wait till the pelt is done, even though the process is not even close to being done. It will be a nice bed in the cave.

I should probably start making pots. I can explore more of this forest another day. I head to my 4 piles of clay. They have dried out a little bit, so I will need to get them wet again. I know I should mix in sand to make sure they don't crack once I put them in a fire. But I haven't seen any sand yet. I'll just have to make do with what I got and hope for the best.

I grab a clump of the dry clay and head to the creek. Once I'm at the creek I look for a flat rock so I can work the clay into pots. I found a flat rock a little ways up the creek. I put the clay on the rock and then use the water from the creek to get the clay a little wet. I then start to knead the clay into a ball. It takes me a few minutes to get the clay into a workable material.

I break the workable clay in half so I can make a bottom part for the pot. I then start to flatten out the clay. Once it is fairly flat I break off a smaller piece from the other half of the clay. I then roll it into a hotdog shape. I take the rolled out clay and put it on top of the flat clay. I put it around the edge so I can make a wall for the pot. It doesn't make a whole circle on top of the pot so I need to roll out another piece of clay.

Once I roll out the other piece of clay I connect it to the other rolled out piece. Making it so that the clay wall is complete. Well the first little bit of the wall. I make more rolled out clay hotdogs and put them on top of the wall till I am out of clay. After making the wall of the pot, I use water to smooth out the sides. I want to make it uniform so that it dries evenly. I put the pot in the shade to dry.

I look up in the sky and the suns are just past the mid-way point of the day. I still have time to explore today. I'll need to be cautious so that the wolf attack doesn't happen again. I grab my spear and head away from the creak and my base. Hopefully I can learn more about the flora and fauna of Primoria.
