Chapter 8 - What It Means To Be A Phoenix

Since hearing of Concepters, Helios had already suspected, that Jack's concept would be that of a phoenix. It just lined up too perfectly and made too much sense for it to not be it.

Still seeing it in person even he was somewhat astonished. The usually ordinary looking Jack gave of such a different feeling in this very moment.

'Yes, I never really looked at his face before, his short brown hair coupled with brown eyes made him look completely ordinary, not even worth mentioning.'

But at this very moment that guy looked majestic. His once ordinary brown eyes were burning like cinder, and his short brown hair was burning like the brightest flames would.

At this moment even Helios had to acknowledge, that Jack's transformation power looked very eye catching, in a good way might I add.

The transformed Jack wasted no time in retaliating against, the rock throwing commander of the enemy army.

At that very moment Jack's greatsword was coated in a flame very similar to the one Helios had using just recently. Though the flames were similar, there were still differences, the flames felt both more, and also less fierce than the flames Helios had used.

Helios assumed it most probably had something to do with the origin of the flames. While his flames were carrying the concept of the sun, Jack's flames were carrying the flames of a phoenix. The origin of the two were both the same and different, he also believed that were they at the same level his flames would be stronger than the ones Jack just used.

With his greatsword now lit on fire, Jack used his newly grown pair of wings to fly directly at his opponent.

The man quickly tried to erect a stone wall but was a step too slow, before he could do it Jack was already in his face.

But as a seasoned warrior the man simply swung his giant axe down and easily deflected Jack's incoming attack.

'That guy has monstrous strength.' Jack thought to himself

'I'll have to catch him off guard somehow.'

To recover from his failed attack Jack quickly tried to retreat, but the man didn't let him. Jack was already in his strike range, he wouldn't be let go of that easily.

With an opportunity before him the man swung his giant axe, and though Jack was able to block it the impact sent him flying back.

'This isn't good I need to find an opportunity to turn this around.'

Figuring he was outscaled in brute strength, he tried to look for another way to fight.

But at that very moment, he noticed the awestruck sitting in the tall grass, and a new idea popped up in his mind.

He would use Helios to beat that monster.

Even if Helios was a mere Grasper, the presence of another person could greatly aid his chances of winning.

As Helios looked up at the battle that was by this point taking place in the sky, he saw one of the participants looking at him.

It was Jack, and while looking at him, it seemed as if he wanted to say something with his mouth.

Helios wasn't too confident in his ability to lip-read, but he still tried nonetheless.

Thanks to Jack's fire focused abilities, Helios could see every movement of Jack's lips, and what it seemingly spelled out was.

"He..lp..m.e"

It was to the point, but Helios was still puzzled.

'Wait aren't you guys evenly matched, what am I supposed to do here?'

But as he thought about it he quickly realised what Jack wanted.

The two were evenly matched, so even a tiny change in the balance, could be the deciding variable that would win them their fight.

But there was another problem. What should Helios do?

He knew that if he got close to that giant he would get squashed instantly, he also realised that the only thing he could throw, the spear was something he had just left in some unknown place.

As he was pondering about what to do, he saw that the enemy commander has already made his move.

A set of stone stairs started to emerge right below the man's feet, as he made his way up to the flying Jack.

At that moment Helios was stuck with a sudden stroke of genius.

He quickly got closer to the battle field and tried to collect some of the stones that the commander was throwing around just minutes before.

He tried his luck and succeeded, he was both able to coat the small rocks in flames, and have them retain that coating for a few second after being thrown.

His strategy was possible!

It was a simple strategy, one even a caveman could think of, but at that very moment it seemed like the best one he had available. He would simply light the rocks on fire and throw them at the commander, hoping it would do some damage or atleast provide the momentary distraction Jack needed to get the upper hand.

Helios got ready and while the battle was already going on in the sky, he lit his first stone, and waited for the right moment.

At that moment, Jack looked down, and noticed that Helios was seemingly ready to help him.

With everything being in place he positioned, his sword and himself in a way where the next hit would send him flying, and then the hit arrived, and he flew back.

Noticing the opportunity Helios lit the rock and threw it as hard as he could in the commanders direction. But there was just one problem, he also needed to hit the target.

But however unlikely it seemed, Helios's first shot actually landed, and then the second, and then the third one finally missed, but by that point the damage was already done.

One of Helios's scorching rock had already hit the commander right on his lower thigh. Which while didn't do much damage was enough to make him lose his footing for a split second, but that was enough.

Jack flew at the giant with full speed and severed his left arm.

The commander let out a loud sound, but by the next moment he was already back up.

He wasn't left handed, but the loss of an arm was still something that would seal his fate in tonight's battle. The constant blood lose, and the sudden change of balance is something one cannot get used to quickly enough.

As he deflected a few of Jack's attacks he started to get weaker and weaker. The blood loss was getting to him.

And then he made a slight mishap, a mishap that would be his last.

As Jack was coming in for his next attack, he changed his trajectory, but the commander was unable, to react in time.

The commander's head was sent flying by the attack, and the stone structures keeping him up in the air quickly collapsed.

The fight was over and Jack won.

As the battle concluded the two were finally able to regroup, and talk once more.

"Your transformation was insane Jack, it was truly a great spectacle watching this fight so close."

Helios was quick to praise the young man, while Helios wasn't usually someone to compliment others, this time was different. Reason being? It was the first fight of such scale that he had seen there was no way he wouldn't be fanboying after seeing that.

"Hey, this was a serious fight, this isn't some play, I could have died if you didn't come fast enough."

"I was just praising you, but you do you I guess."

Trying to get to a more serious topic, Jack quickly asked Helios.

"Were you able to get rid of the people on your part?"

"Well....not really." Helios answered sheepishly

"What do you mean "Not really"?"

"Well I killed two of them but the rest are probably still in the fire over there."

He gestured in the direction of where he came from where a big fire was brewing.

"Is this not good?" Helios asked not sure if there was a problem with his approach.

"Usually I would say yes, but this time around this might be optimal."

"Optimal?"

Helios asked somewhat baffled.

"Did you not notice? The commander wasn't strong enough. He couldn't have opened that barrier himself."

"Wait not strong enough? He was on par with you, and you only won thanks to my intervention."

"Still I couldn't even dream of opening the goddess's barrier, there is not way he could do it."

Helios being satisfied with Jack's answer went onto his next question.

"So we gonna leave some alive and question them, or why is it optimal?"

"See, so you do have a head, you should use it more often"

Helios wanted to retaliate, but couldn't, his action have indeed been somewhat questionable recently.

"By the way what happened to your spear, did you really leave it somewhere?"

"Yes..."

"Pfft..haha, seriously you came up with that plan, just for it to be worthless you really are something else haha."

Helios's face was burning red with embarrassment.

"Okay, lets just go and clean up."

Jack said ending his laughter.

The two went to search for the remaining soldiers, but were shocked to discover a large number of bodies piled together all burned to death by the fire.

"Wait, what did you do Helios?"

"I just grouped them up and set fire around them in a circle. I expected most to survive."

"Helios, this place is so dry, there is no way any would be able to survive this."

"Then I guess I did a good job"

Helios was both happy that he was able to do his job properly, and also somewhat somber, since they lost their only chance to gather intel, but at that very moment movement could be seen from the large pile of bodies.

As the two got closer they found a young man still alive hidden in the pile of bodies.

The two looked at each other and said in tandem.

"Bingo!"
