Chapter 13 - Siren - Chapter 13

Wendy began to tell her story to Renan so that he could understand how and why Demian had taken an interest in her.

The girl's first memory was of her clairvoyant power. That power was something many considered a curse, and even she thought the same for a long time.

The first time this power activated was when she looked at her father and mother. Instead of seeing a happy future where they would be a joyful family, she saw how their lives would end in a car accident.

Wendy was the only survivor.

She was only four years old when the tragedy happened, and so she was unable to try to stop it or do anything at all.

Even though she could see the future, her own remained a mystery to the young girl...

Because of that, she began being passed from orphanage to orphanage... She was adopted only to be sent back again, considered cursed. Families all knew she was a special girl and tried their best to take care of her.

But the fact that she spoke of morbid things, always predicting when tragedies would happen caused everyone to fear her.

"You're a witch!"

"You're cursed!"

"You're a monster!"

She always knew when a child would be adopted, or when they would be returned... or even when a tragedy would strike in that child's life. Wendy always knew everything.

It was overwhelming for everyone—but especially for her.

The girl knew she couldn't keep exposing herself like that; it only made her more isolated.

Unfortunately, she only learned her lesson when it was already too late, and her reputation as the "weird girl" had already taken root.

There came a time when Wendy was forbidden from speaking to the other children, as everyone was scared of her.

Because of that, people around her began to spread rumors and misunderstand how her power actually worked.

To them, her predictions only became real if she spoke about the future or stayed close to others.

And for that both children and adults kept their distance.

She ate alone, slept alone, and lived as if she were a walking danger.

To distract herself, she created imaginary friends whom she claimed were "from different times."

No one knew if it was just imagination or some other kind of power.

When she turned sixteen, she believed she had had enough. It was clear that she would never achieve anything in those orphanages.

No one wanted to be near her, and the only way she could build a comfortable life was by leaving that place behind and trying to move on with her life.

She had no money, no family, and no friends—but she had knowledge.

Thanks to her visions, she already knew which streets were safest to sleep on, which shop owners were kind enough to give away leftover food at the end of the day, and where she could find an abandoned building that would go unnoticed by authorities for months.

She settled into an old, crumbling apartment complex on the outskirts of the city. The place had no electricity and barely any plumbing, but it was quiet and hidden.

Wendy survived by reading people's futures in exchange for food, coins, or favors. She never charged too much—just enough to get by.

She knew which people would pay and which ones would hurt her, so she chose her clients carefully.

Eventually, word spread in the underground: there was a strange pink-haired girl who could predict anything.

Some came out of curiosity. Others, out of desperation.

And then… Demian came.

He was already a vampire at that time, and although he only knew the basics of magic, he understood what the girl was—a Siren.

The vampire had entered the apartment where she was living. The place was more organized than when she first found it, as she had managed to earn enough money for a more comfortable life.

"You are wasting your potential." The vampire's voice was hollow.

He rarely showed emotion when he wasn't being violent.

"But… I don't have other choice..." Wendy said.

She was afraid of him... After all he was a vampire, and she could feel his dark aura.

But the fact that Demian had no defined future made her attracted to him, wishing to stay at his side.

Her visions of his future were blurry, as he was a creature of shadows who could shape his own path in life using his powers, unlike mortals who needed guidance most of the time.

"You do have another choice. I can guide you and protect you if you help me with my goals," Demian said, staring at her.

"You're more powerful than you realize, and you shouldn't suffer just because you don't fit in as a human."

Those words inspired the girl, and without thinking too much, she agreed to stand by his side.
