Chapter 4 - Thugs

"Great. You're still normally conditioned with your power, Mr. Valentine." The doctor said after reading the latest reports he did inside the laboratory.

While putting my polo back on, he showed me the scan of my body. "Here. This is what's the most interesting part about your body." I peeked as he pointed toward my holed heart.

"What's interesting about it?" I asked. Though I have some ideas to it but better let the expert talk first.

"Well. First of all, I'm more shocked when I discovered that you have a hole in your heart from a bullet shot and, you know—you're still breathing, no offense by the way."

"It's alright."

"Secondly, when we did this test last time before you got fired as a hero. I can surely say that you completely lost your telekinetic ability. There's no sign of it left from your system but the real question here is. How did you managed to bring it back? And it's actually more powerful than the last. It's just amazing!"

I put on my jacket and grimaced, "Even me. I didn't know how it happened. It just... you know. Came back to me like a switch. It was all too sudden."

"Oh. Before I forgot to tell you the most interesting part is, that hole in your heart was undeniably the source of your power." he said, looking at me with a serious look, "did that brought a little light to it, Mr. Valentine?"

I was silent for a few seconds. "I don't know. Oh. Maybe!"

I saw how his smile widened. "Exactly, Mr. Valentine. That bullet shot somehow triggered something inside you."

"Which was to awaken the true potential of my power. That explains why I didn't die despite the injury."

"Now this conversation is definitely going somewhere."

That made a shocking revelation and it's making me excited inside. But after a short while a thought came to mind. "But if that's really the case. Who was that burglar who shot me?"

Our conversation was cut off when someone knocked on the lab room door. It's a girl with spectacles, also in a lab gown, "Doctor Xeran, you are needed on Lab 13. It's an emergency."

"Oh! Those newbie, don't tell me they're playing with my equipments again!"

"Unfortunately, one of them already broke something." The woman answered making the doctor shout in utmost frustration.

"Until next time, Mr. Valentine!" he shouted before leaving with such urgency.

While walking alone toward the outside of the facility, I noticed a familiar face by its entrance door.

He's in a black suit and a stylish sunglasses. He approached me and offered for a handshake, "Long time no see, Mr. Valentine. Never expected you to come back at the agency's lab."

He walked with me outside where a cab was waiting.

"It's just a short visit, Nolan. Just a small check-up to clear something of confusion." The guy's name is Nolan Cortez. Twenty-three years old and the head captain of the Hero Section 2.

Everyone admires him. Even all of his co-heroes do but not me. Why? Because I just don't want to. Period.

"So, what did you learn after the check-up?" He remained at the top of the stairs in which I continued walking down. "did your power came back? Or is it just some lame excuse so that you can visit the agency one more time?"

He's still as frank as ever. I opened the door of the cab, smiled to him, "Actually. It really came back."

He scoffed. "Jokes. Mr. Valentine. Just tell me the truth. Why did you come back?"

"Don't worry. I'm not interested in becoming a hero again."

"You better not be. Because you're too weak to be one to begin with. You'll just let everyone down like you always do." If this was the first time I heard it from him, I might have feel so downed to myself right then.

But I'm too old to be arguing with a guy like him. Hero or not. I'm still way older than him. And a valid reason not to fight back anymore.

"Goodbye, Nolan. It's always nice to see you."

While on the way home. My phone rang, and the call came from my old colleague in the Hero Agency. "Hello? How are you doing, Pablo?" I smiled as I answered it.

'Dammit, Tobias! Why didn't you told me anything?!'

"Told you what?"

'You have your power back, didn't you?'

"That's right."

'So?!'

"So what?"

I can hear him groaning in the background. 'For pete's sake, you should have visited me in my office!'

"What for?"

'So that you can come back being a hero—isn't that obvious?!'

"Sorry, Pablo. But I don't have the interest to be one anymore. I already have a job now." I looked at my wristwatch, before looking at the road we are passing.

'Which is?'

"You still remember Fin Kennington?"

'Of course, how would I ever forget that rich bastard?'

I chuckled. "I am his daughter's personal bodyguard now."

'Chloe?'

"Yeah."

Leaving him silent for a few seconds there. Then a sigh before talking again. 'Well. Too bad, Tobias. If that's what you really want, Then I'll just leave you to it."

I smiled. I'd totally miss him by the way. "Thanks. You've done so much for me in the past years, Pablo."

'Yeah. Give my greetings to Fin and Chloe, will you?'

"Sure will do."

'And also, if ever you change your mind. Feel free to contact me.'

"Of course."

'Bye, Tobias.'

"Yeah. Goodbye my friend."

The rain started pouring when I noticed a school girl by the side road suddenly got dragged by a bunch of people inside a parked van.

"Stop the car, mister." the driver definitely saw what I saw, but by his reaction, he's definitely not the brave type to interfere such dangerous things for the good of others.

"Call the police, could you? Thank you." I nicely said to him as the cab came to a halt.

The van was parked seven meters ahead of where we stopped. And as this van could ran away, with just a simple flick of my finger, one of the van's tire came off by such an unseen brute force.

I immediately smiled. I flicked the other tire off along with the other two without even exerting much effort to it. This is really kinda easy compared in the past.

They're already shouting and pounding inside the van, when I motioned my hand upward, there the van's roof tear off like a dragon's claw did it.

Then I saw four men came out panicking, along with the kidnapped girl.

They still planned on escaping with the girl, but as I make a closed my hand with force, the kidnapper's wrist bone broke.

They screamed in agony while soaking wet in the side road. They released the girl, crying as she ran desperately toward my direction. "Thank you so much, mister!" She's sobbing and trembling.

I smiled to her. Patting her on the back. "It's okay now. I'll take you to your home."
