I stepped into the elevator just as Caleb's voice rang out across the lobby.
"Hold that elevator!"
My finger hovered over the close button. A part of me wanted to escape this encounter—what would I even say to him? But before I could decide, Miles joined me, holding the doors open.
"Juliana, perfect timing," Miles said. "Team's waiting for us upstairs."
Caleb and his entourage reached the elevator just as Miles was about to let the doors close. Their eyes met, and Miles immediately stiffened.
"Mr. Beaumont," he said, his voice suddenly professional. "I didn't realize you were here already."
"Change of plans," Caleb replied smoothly, his eyes still fixed on me. "I had some business to attend to before the meeting."
The elevator felt impossibly small with all of us crammed inside. I kept my eyes on the floor numbers as they lit up, one by one. The silence was deafening.
"How's your sister?" I finally asked, unable to bear the tension.
